First of all, thanks to all of you for having taken part of the discussion 'Nikon needs to strike back soon'. Some of the posts were very informative.

So now that Nikon has revealed the two camera (D300 and D3). What do you think about the impact of the D300 in the competition market? About the price? about the specs (albeit we do not know the final output quality of the image)?

IMO, the D300 is a little bit too expensive for what it really is. The Canon EOS40D is a very affordable semi-pro camera which will be about 500 $ less than the D300. From this perspective, if I were a new user, and if I wanted to invest in a semi-pro camera, no doubt that I will go for the 40D.

I still think Nikon missed an opportunity to do a serious breakthrough in the market by not introducing the D300 with a pseudo FF sensor (1.1 crop factor with compatibility with DX format). Imagine the D300's price lying between the 40D's and 5D's (and the new possible 7's) prices, that would have certainly had a serious impact (because the D300 would have been seen as an affordable ~FF camera by consumers, and much cheaper that what Canon is going to offer in the next six months). Nonetheless, I think that Nikon has seriously raised the bar very high more recently, and I am glad that there is not a real monopoly in the dSLR market.

Though, I am not sure that the competition between Canon and Nikon will help other manufacturers such as Pentax, Olympus, Fuji, Sigma in a near future. We will see.

Here is an interesting report from the Nikon pressconference. There is also a graph of sales by all major manufacturers.

Konica Minolta/Sony and Fuji are nearly death when it comes to sales, the new Nikons will kill Fuji. Pentax and Olympus hang down there with a market share of 5% each. Nikon and Canon have the same market share. While Nikon expect Canon to drop down and them to gain, I expect both to hover near the point where they are now, maybe gaining a percent or two, leaving all the others rock bottom.
Sony can introduce a FF pro camera, but few will buy it. Their market share is too small to really make a realistic price point or to make money on it. Pentax and Olympus are survivors.

Canon and Nikon continue to make new and hopefully better cameras. It really does not matter which is the overall best- there are consumers that find models of each that they prefer for their needs and budget. The "winner" of the comptetion between the two are consumers who have growing choices of quality cameras.

Well, knowing the very large amount of profit that the two major companies are making, I think that it will be right to assume that they are the Big Winners! But, we (the consumers) are somewhat in a good position since the two rival companies are going to struggle hard to be #1.

I think Pentax and Olympus are almost near the end, too bad though!

I found Thom Hogan's impressions quite interesting.

Basically, he views the new D300 as a D2xs for $3200 cheaper. He also mentions that the D300 may have a slight feature advantage over the 40D.

For me, I'd go with Nikon due to my existing lenses. Otherwise, it's a bit of a toss-up.
