Well, I'd be sick about not spending the extra money to get what I really wanted...I hate it when I try to save some money by buying something a little less than what I really wanted...I end up buying what I really wanted later. It is better to buy what you want than regret it later and buy it anyway.

$1299 is the MSRP/sugg retail from what I've seen - so B&H will have them for $50-100 less in 3 weeks or so after release.
How fast will they 'fly off the shelves'? will there be a 'shortage'? Canon's been pretty good about releasing when they say and in enough quantity, so I wouldn't worry about being able to get one. If you want to be the first on your block then pre-order.

I'm waiting until the price drops...which will be hard for me as I want it NOW!

Does equipment matter? YES, it most certainly does. The photographer has the vision, but also has to have the gear to make that vision a photo.

i have a 30D and was shooting truck pulls last night - i had a 17-55 2.8 IS, a high end EF-S lens with USM. I also have a 70-200 2.8 IS L lens - the only L I have.

The L could focus fast enough and the EF-S could not - I'd focus on the front of the vehicle and the L would get it - the EF-S would get the pull sled in focus...a 1D would probably have been better yet - this was wide open, ISO 1600 and 1/100 (and that should have been 1/200 for better results).
So lenses matter, focus speed and accuracy matter too. I had a 'vision' but my gear wasn't up to that vision.

Sorry, no pics...contest (speed) upcoming. But it was a blast anyway - i was on the track, in the pits - up close and personal!

Why don't you trade your 30D for a 1D after you get the 40? That's what my setup is going to be after I can afford the 40. I'm pretty sure its new focusing system won't be as good as the 1 series, and shooting sports with a 1D just feels better.

The body design will spoil you, though, after you get used to the weight. I shot an MX race today and it rained pretty hard for a few minutes, gave the camera a shower... There's not really anything to trap water, it just runs off so I don't even think about it. Plus with the custom functions, and personal functions if you get a firewire cable and the driver, you can customize almost everything about the operation of the camera.

Must say though, I'm really looking forward to having a good CMOS sensor for night photography...
