I think that is true - But in a backlighting challenge I would like to see some backlighting be quite pronounced. Not side lighting or lighting from the top.

I've been hammered (actually my vote, note me) this afternoon - a drop of 0.2533 in eight votes! Those last two votes of 3 knocked off a full tenth by themselves. I usually expect an afternoon dip after rollover night, but WFT?? |

I sometimes get that drop in only a couple of votes....you just can't tell at DPC. |

I've had a similar afternoon, unfortunately I felt I had a pretty good image but the scorers this pm have not agreed, at least two 1's, and a block of 4s that came through. Obviously I've watched this one too much. I'm not sure if they feel the image DNMC, didn't like it, or are just voting to improve their score (hate to think that, especially with DPL not in season.) thanks to Jeff for a nice comment though.
Anyway, time to move on to the next challenge.. :(

You clearly saw it wasn't a silhouette. Go show people how to calibrate their monitors as the second part of your voting - lol |
One thing I would say, as an aside, if its dark enough that it appears to be a silhouette then regardless of monitor calibration at the very least the subject is underexposed or dark. (At least in my opinion).
Of course there are a few other shots that are overexposed...especially mine...WOW is it over exposed...I think I might go blind if I look at again. :)
I think the hard part of this challenge (and with backlighting in general) is if you aren't going for a silhouette it is hard to get good lighting on the subject.
I've also received feedback on my comments where I have indicated that it appears to me that the lighting is not from behind. In my defense if I see more shadows on the side than the front I don't think I am out of line thinking that its sidelit. Again, its MY opinion so please don't try to correct me on it. (As some have felt obliged to do in their responses). That's the one thing I have learned on this site. If you have to write someone to explain what you are doing then you probably didn't convince that person well enough with the photograph itself. (That's why I hate entries where the only link to the challenge is the title). *sigh*
Sorry...I hate getting blasted for comments I make when I am simply expressing an honest objective opinion.

Craig, i think you are 100% correct.
yes, there are a lot of photos that are not backlit.
yes, the photos here should scream -backlighting - this is the chalenge... its not "take whatever way shot as long as there is some backlighting"...
i cant believe that people actually "blasted" you for pointing out what you see in their photos... i guess they rather you Listen to what they Tell you about the photo, and that you should Believe them and not your eyes...

i dont understand.
people actually respond to comments that they are getting during voting?
isnt that a bit inappropriate?
isnt it against the spirit of the "anonymity" of the voting process?
so we are going to have "arguments" over comments given during the voting which expose everyone to everyone...
i am new here, just joined. maybe someone can expalin this to me
thank you.

You will find quite a few people reply to your comments especially if they don't like them - I never do as I appreciate someone giving me the time to look and vote even if they are good or bad - You can also vote with no one knowing who you are if you prefer.

That must mean quite a low vote...
and Thnx for your comment Jeff!
I called in sick from work yesterday (I'm kinda doing the robot from some pulled muscles in my neck and shoulder ) so today I should have enough time to vote and comment on every picture.
However I find it very hard to say something nice when I don't like a photo. I allways try to pick out something that would've improved the photo.
well...here we go :-) |

Meh. I suspected it would do this. Almost can't wait for voting to end so I can stop mashing the update button expecting a decent score (which isn't going to happen). My only hope is that it stays above 5.

Yes it's terrible, I hate when I get a reply to a comment. If a photo has to be explained through an email than obviously the point has been missed!
Besides, it instantly gives away who's picture that is. If linking to your voting page is against the rules, so should this practice.

I've finally voted all entires.
Quote:
Here's the catch: the subject must not become a silhouette because of the backlighting.
I'm surprise to see that many photos failed to comply this important "rule". I don't think silhouette works and those are rated 4 and below.
Some entries are really beautiful like leaves, and some entries (still life) are very creative. |

Still just hanging in there - I had over 7 at one point quite late in voting and then there was an afternoon of shame!
At the end of the day though it's nice to get some fav's cause someone out there likes it!

I just read back some post about... what? Monitor calibration? This is hilarious. If a voter has to be in such a difficult position by climbing up and low and crawling left and right in front of the LCD monitor, or maximize the brightness just to ensure the dark image is not a silhouette, well, it's just too bad that the shot has failed.
My high vote will go to those shots that covey the "Backlighting" message successfully on my non-calibrated, dark & cheap monitor. |

I hate this challenge. I am not and never was crazy about my photo. Then one of my favorite Photogs left me a good comment. my score is just above my average, but I thought hey this person likes it so I am cool with that. I then got a 2nd comment that liked it, from a new member same day sign up. I usually do not give those comments too much credit until I see how long the person sticks around or if the account is even legit for that matter. 3rd comment from one of the big dogs here whos oppinion I take to the bank. Doesnt really care for my photo , which probalby has explained the score I have. But it also busted my bubble. Now I am not sure if my photo sucks or shines but I do know one thing for sure now. Two photographers here whom I think are equally skilled and have heaps of experience in the field have too totally different sets of taste, I must be somewhere right in the middle.

I think, the issue of responding to a comment to clarify commentators' doubt(s) without compromising the spirit of "anonymity" could be solved in some cases.
If the commentator has email id listed on his/her profile, photog could send an email from an email-id not listed on his/her own profile (or web-site).
Of course, photog must not sign name or dpc-profile-id in the email.
