How long my precious will be working with me?
I'm a little worried because I read in other forum a guy with 24.000 shoots and a dead camera.
I know that probably I need to replace the shooter but have not idea its shelf life to be some kind of ready. I don't want a surprise in a bad moment.
Please LMK to be prepare,
Thanks, |

I went shutter crazy with my D70 and managed to reach around 140,000 actuations (the camera is rated for 50,000 actuations I think) before the shutter failed. I had it replaced, and the camera works as new.
A Nikon technician told me that the ratings are always low, that the actual number of actuations can be and often is much higher than the rating.
PS - quite a few of those were just playing around with the camera, like when I was showing off how many pictures I could make in a row. Idiot stuff like that. :) I'm shooting a lot less with my D200.

I'm guilty about it too ;-) I wasn't worried about this think before I read that thread.
By the way, how to know how many actuations my camera have?
Thanks for your help,

The only way I know is in photoshop. It is somewhere in extended metadata. Possibly in xmp section. Click around and you'll find it.

For the D70, which doesn't list the actual actuations in the EXIF that we normally see (it's encoded), there was a utility that someone created that gave you the true number of actuations for your camera. I don't have it now, as I stopped worrying about it, but if you google for it you probably will find it.

Preview Extractor and shutter count
My file number count is 12466, the shutter count is 12670.
It probably includes the times you open the shutter for dust removal, but it is a big difference regardless.

The problem with my D70 is that the top LCD has died a bit, there is dust on the prism and the 70-200 fits a bit loose. I do not think I will upgrade soon, got other priorities now.

Im really curious as to what mine is, I should check it out when I get home. Ive only had it for about a year and a half maybe, but ive worked so much in that time that im sure ive racked up some clicks. This could be a good excuse to go out and buy a 2nd body hahaha (but no, im saving for better glass now) |

Thanks for your help, now I know that I get my nikon with 14136 in 04/26/06 and now have around 26800, 12664 in 15 months. This is really helpful for me, but as ajdelaware this could be a good excuse for a second body, maybe D200 or D300 in the near future.
Does anybody knows the price for the shutter replacement?
Thanks again, |

I think you're a long way off from needing a shutter replacement. But ... I paid about $300 Canadian to have mine replaced early this year. It was worth it to me, because the D70 is a very good backup body, and also because that way if I go out shooting with my daughter, she has an SLR to work with, and will learn a lot more that way I think.
And now I also can put the 50mm on one and the 105 macro on the other, and really enjoy myself :)

I feel like I'm seriously underachieving here with a meager 12944 clicks in 23 months.

In october my D70 will be 36 months old and by that time will have app. 13000 clicks on it. It is not my profession and I only click if I feel like clicking. I hate going trough 3000 garbage shots.
The S602 before it easily had 50000 on it in two years. I know what I want now and if it is not there I do not shoot.

Looks like I have a couple hundred shots left to catch up to you: 42,627
Knock on wood, no problems yet. I had my D100 pretty much rebuilt a couple years ago after it developed a mysterious problem where it would shoot random black frames for no reason. But it's working like a trooper now, too. |

I have the same problem with the LCD. Another friend did, too, but managed to get it fixed under warranty. My focus light only works intermittently, too, and I need a good cleaning, but otherwise all is well. None of the problems are bad enough to pay for repairs, but I am starting to drool over the D300....I see a new camera coming my way sometime in 2008... |

After some rain on it mine would not actuate the shutter anymore today until I pulled the battery out...
