These days 1.6 multiplier is very common to Canon EOS models, What was the need of that? just to have low range Lenses and have it multiply by 1.6 to grab a shot? or something else?

Cost reduction. Costs less to make the smaller sensor.

It is also a hang-over from film - APS cameras use a smaller film frame (hence the sensor size being referred to as "APS-C sized").

Nikon, Sony, Pentax...all have only 1.6x or 1.5x crop sensors. Canon is the only one so far to have Full frame 1x sensors.
