Whats the deal with the ungodly large ugly 'fancy' borders?

I find fine art displayed as 11x14 in a 16x20 frame quite often. So I think that using a large white border is not a distraction to the image. Thanks for your fine comment though.

What's the deal with people enhancing a photo with a border? BEJESUS!
:-P

I have no problems with borders 'enhancing' a nice shot, but when the border is apperently supposed to distract from an otherwise ordinary shot...

Ordinary is in the eye of the photographer and the viewer. 9th place must be above ordinary for most.

Are we being a little defensive? I kind of liked your shot EXCEPT I thought the border was a little overbearing and unnecesary. I would have rather seen the detail larger. I was really refering to people who seemed to spent more time on the border than the shot itself, for example:

And a couple of others...

Nice border, Crab.

TooCool - Have you considered asking your doctor about ADD or other concentration impairing conditions? Might help with all the distractions.

It never fails to amaze me how many people feel the need to resort to name calling rather than debating rationally their chosen side...

It was a joke TooCool, keep your pants on. Besides, are you saying that ADD would be something to be insulted about?

Personally, I just think your over-reacting a bit about the borders. Yea, some are a little too far, like the one you indicated (even though that one will most likely be DQ'd I believe, if this is basic editing). Seems your being a bit prejudiced against all borders that aren't just your standard 2 or 3 pixel black or white border. Photography is art, not just stock photos.

I felt no need to debate, as I felt that the origins of this thread made no sense. What's the reasoning or intent of starting this thread? I think it was a way to let off some steam and get the mass of voters fumed once again by this or that meeting or not meeting the challenge. It's fine to have opinions, but please understand that not everyone will share those opinions and that your expressing of them may infact offend those who might have learned a new border treatment that week and actually like their choice.

Peace,
-danny

I think this comment:

"Whats the deal with the ungodly large ugly 'fancy' borders?"

(in contrast to something like:
"I personally found some of the large borders used in this challenge distracting")

started the "name-calling." If you can focus on the specific technical or esthetic feature which bothers you instead of trashing people's sincere efforts, you'll be less likely to receive insults in return.

You are putting words in my mouth. (predudices in my head?) I was just pointing out that in this challenge (and in particular this voting session in this challenge) there seemed to be some very unneeded overbearingly large borders. Please put the emphasis on 'unneeded'. In many cases a well designed border (I will admit I do like simple ones) can make a very nice shot even nicer!

And there I can agree with you whole heartedly!

Thank you, I have plenty of professional experience at diagnosing the condition ... sometimes even in others.

Very cute shot! I must admit I'm probably a little on edge! I think I've worked about 60 hours since Friday morning. Our computers went down at work during one of the busiest times of the year... I'm so tired I'm hearing things... I haven't even taken any photos for 3 days. OMG where's my camera...oh there it is (sigh) Now I got 5 days with no update button to push! Now where's my flashlight. I got things to paint. :-P

What's scary (besides my having to be at work at 5:30 am) is that he used to be able to get BOTH feet in there at once. I was afraid he'd grow up to be President for sure!
