Since 1983 Aperture̢۪s Work-Scholar Program has brought individuals of special promise from the United States and around the world into sustained contact with all of Aperture̢۪s activities. Successful Work Scholars find themselves engaged in the writing, editing, design, production, circulation, and marketing of photography̢۪s most significant publications; in the development of major traveling exhibitions and their promotion both in the United States and abroad; and in the business operations essential to a nonprofit organization. Aperture̢۪s Work Scholar Program welcomes an average of sixteen young graduates each year who emerge from the program equipped with skills and experiences essential to excelling in a myriad of related professions.
Time Commitment
The program is designed for a six-month or twelve-month commitment, running from January through June and/or from July through December. Please note that full-time commitment is mandatory unless otherwise specified. We do not offer summer or semester-long internships. Full-time Work Scholar interns receive a stipend of $250 per month and complimentary copies of Aperture magazine throughout their tenure. (Interns also have the opportunity to take on evening/weekend part-time work at an hourly rate in Aperture̢۪s bookstore and gallery.) Applicants must be prepared to make their own living arrangements and should have sufficient financial resources to cover living expenses. College credit is available for this program.
Application Requirements
Submit a current résumé and cover letter describing your background, skills, and motivations for applying. In the first sentence of your letter, please be sure to indicate one to three departments, in order of preference, for which you would like to be considered, and the time period for which you would be available (six or twelve months, beginning in January or July). Certain departments require additional samples of work; please be sure to carefully review individual department requirements below before submitting your materials.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
International applicants who have yet to obtain a working visa must apply at least three months prior to the season̢۪s start date in order to allow enough time to complete the appropriate paperwork.
