I'm looking for help kind of "glaming up" a photo I have as a gift for a friend. I'd like to end up with it in black and white, and I don't feel that I have the skills to do it myself. I uploaded the original file to anyone who feels up to some fun.
Thanks in advance for anyone's help! |

Nice shot. Watch the hard shadows, they're tough to deal with later.

I used 3D LightMaster, then added contrast & some blur. :)

I wonder whether cropping a little more might help, too. I would suggest perhaps a square crop, so that the right shoulder is cropped off, complete with the shadows falling on it. Personally, I feel that these shadows don't sit too well with the rest of the image.

Here's mine.
Another thing to add to when shooting is to try and get a reflector or light source behind your model to show some separation from the back ground. :) |

wow thanks guys.. i know the shadows are pretty harsh, i'd just gotten new lights, and not even heard of reflectors really, it was taken for the headwear challenge actually. if i could do it again, i'm sure it'd turn out great, but these are awesome, i'll have a hard time choosing! |

Thanks Jeff :). I converted to B/W using a black and white gradient map and below that I put a selective color adjustment and played with the black of each color to get the lightness. I masked out the yellow of the hair on this layer because I lightened it for skin tone. Made another selective color adjustment under that and made the yellow darker for the hair. On the image I duplicated it and set to soft light, then played with fade and opacity, then flattened. Next I duplicated the image again and did a strong gaussian blur then completely masked out the eyes and hair, and 50% on the lips and eyebrows, then faded back the effect. Flattened and duplicated again and ran LUKO USm technique. here are the settings to do this, I set it up as an action. its three passes.
first at 150, .3, 0. set to darken.
second at 150, .3, 0 fade 50% set to lighten.
third 18, 40, 0. normal settings
I ran this on the full size image and masked out skin
Resized to 640 and ran it again and faded it some and masked out effects on skin and hair.
Flattened whole image and duplicated it. Then ran shadows/highlights layer, created a mask and used the circle gradient around her face to lighten here and get some detail in the hat, then added some of the shadows highlights back in with a brush onto the background. I think it took me longer to write this than actually do it. :-P |

---------Before----------- ---------------------------After----------------------------
Besides the background fix, cloning in lighten mode using the lighter parts of the texture on the right side to add to the left side background, Most of this was applying a soft focus and easing off on the clothing, hair & eyes. Adjusted levels on the hat.

Here's my contribution:
Converted to gray scale via channel mixer, cropped, blurred edges, added border. |

Different Photographers editing the same photo, its neat to see how everyone views how they would edit the photo:) |
