So before I started posting pics here in the challenges, I thought my camera was pretty fantabulous...BUT, every picture (all 2 of them) that I've posted so far seems grainy and I'm not sure what I'm doing or maybe what I'm not doing that is giving my pictures this effect. Any suggestions? I'll be extremely grateful for any help you can give!

(Very new here and only have a free account for the time being, so I'm not sure how to get my pictures in this post...)

What camera settings were you using? The higher the ISO the more grainy your images will be.

The free account doesn't include portfolio space so in order to show us some images you have to upload them somewhere else on the internet. There are plenty of free sites that allow this like webshots and flickr.

ISO 400 is going to produce noise on most P&S cameras. Actually most don't do too well at ISO400 and some even ISO200.

Do you shoot in Auto Mode? If you shoot in Auto mode the camera will choose what ISO (and all other settings) it believes best for the situation. In Auto Mode you are not going to have a choice.

Maybe shoot in one of the creative zones where you can choose the ISO (200 or less) and choose a larger (smaller #) aperture to allow more light in.

Also you might want to pick yourself up some Noise Reducing software for those times that the shots get grainy.

brb - going to hunt the freeware version of Noiseware Community Edition.

Ed: Found it...

//www.imagenomic.com/download.aspx near the bottom of the page you will see Community Edition Stand Alone. It is very easy to use, most of the time you can use the default settings.

Note: for challenges you may be asked from time to time to submit the original shot for validation. You should always be working on a copy of the original anyways, but I point it out because this freeware software does strip the EXIF off the saved photo which is fine for challenges but not for validation.

I use that camera, and love it, BUT it does produce quite a bit of noise the higher you go with ISO. Try not to shoot above 100 if you can help it, keeping it on 50 if at all possible.
Open up your aperture as much as possible, then if needed go slower shutter, before even considering boosting ISO.

Despite everything, sometimes you WILL still get noise. I use noiseware, which is a free download, but often, instead, use photoshop's "surface blur" tool. I use PS CS2, so not sure if that tool is available on earlier versions or not. I find a setting of radius 5-7, threshold 5-7 clears the noise on smooth surfaces without loss of details.

noiseware download, at the bottom of this page.

eta; I see it was found while I was typing :)
edit again to add;

Also, make sure you're not underexposing your shots. If you have to lighten a lot, this will also increase your noise :)

Last edit, I promise! Just did a quick sample shot. There is no other editing to these other than noise treatment. 100% crop;

unedited

photoshop "surface blur", settings 7, 7

noiseware free edition, default settings

Thanks so much for all of your feedback and suggestions! This whole time, I've been thinking the higher the ISO, the higher quality the shot will be. Not sure what I read and misunderstood. I have been using the "P" setting on my camera, so I'm able to tweak all settings.

I've posted both of the pictures that I've submitted in the challenges here on my photoblog - [redacted]

Yes, ISO noise. As previous posters have said, try to keep your ISO to 200 or below.

In the forum, posting links to current challenge entries may not be a good idea.
