What are some practical foods to bring on a 1 day canoe/camping trip? We will have a grill so BBQ is going to be the obvious entree. I was thinking a lobster salad would be a nice side. Can yall throw some other yummy suggestions at me please?
EDIT: yes we have several coolers :D

Are you taking a cooler? Most of the time, we stayed away from perishables unless we could keep them cool. Ramen noodles is always a favorite.
Can you fish?
Where are you going? |

hmm there will be no fishing, it will be a one day trip: canoe to the camp site, unload all the stuff, eat and chill for the whole day, then canoe back by night time. |

I'm sorry, don't be mad but I can't stop laughing about the thought of having a lobster salad on a canoe/camping trip. When I think of camping I think of sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, maybe cold fried chicken or catching and cooking fish. Lobster seems too urban for a camping trip...of course I was raised in Colorado where we could catch rainbow trout pretty much anytime. Lobster is probably the food of choice in the costal regions, I know when I lived in NC people did catch fresh crab and cooked them up right on the beach so I guess anything is possible. Just struck me funny.
Portabella mushrooms make excellent substitutes for burgers if you don't want to hassle with the raw meat part of that and grill up very nice. If you can find it you can also put ears of corn (still in husk) on the grill, that has great flavors.
Have fun and remember at least two things: keep the camera and matches dry and a spatula for the grill (been there, forgot that lol). |

First and most importantly, be sure to bring plenty of drinking water! When you're out on the water, you'll work a lot harder than you might realize. In addition, you have the sun beating down on you, pretty much nonstop since unlike hiking, you're rarely if ever under the shade of trees. Similarly, energy food such as gorp is a critical thing to have.
I'm assuming the barbecue is for dinner. If you have a pot, a cooking surface to set the pot on, and know how to build a good cooking fire, baked beans and corn on the cob are two easy sides that go well with a barbecue. They're practical and convenient because they don't need to be kept refrigerated, though you do need to bring the appropriate cooking and serving utensils with you. This is less an issue for corn, which can be cooked right on the fire in the husks or aluminum foil.
S'mores are of course a campfire must. Keep the chocolate in your cooler, sealed in a watertight bag until you're ready to use it.
Of course, remember to follow good "leave no trace" practices and carry out what you carry in (or dispose of it properly). One common misconception is that it is ok to discard organic waste such as banana peels on the trail. In reality, waste from non-native plants can be harmful and should be carried out, just like you would with non-organic waste.
