Cool test shots smurf.
I totally understand and do not/have not dispute(d) that increasing the ISO for the +4 EV shot would increase the overall average noise.
I believe that there must be a convergence point, however, where the added noise from increased ISO would be less than the noise in the shadow areas at the lower ISO. At least the captured signal to noise ratio.
And wouldn't this be very dependent on the camera/sensor?
Some of the test shots I've seen with the new MKIII are pretty amazing.
Would be interesting to see the same comparison you did with the MKIII at ISO 50 and +4 at ISO 800.

Yes, a nicer camera might produce better results using ISO. Though still noisy, the ISO1600 shot is much better than the original. I suppose one could also use a combination of ISO and shutter to achieve +4 exposure. However, we're still in the realm of 2 separate shots...
