Find a good stock photo of a baby, and give her that. They all look alike at that age.... ;-)
Seriously, I used to do elementary school photography, and always hated it when mothers would come at the end of the day with their tiny infants, hoping I'd be able to get an award-winning shot of their lovely bundle.

May be a little late for that. but you can drape the corner of a couch in fabric and place him there. You're gonna need soft light, because you'll be pretty much forced to work close to the background.

What do you have for lighting, already? You gonna shoot indoors or out? Give us your plan :-)

The softbox should be fine. Gonna have to try to catch him when he is being most still though since you are using continuous light. Try to get near a window also. Especially a north facing window.
As far as posing goes... I'm pretty useless for ya. I don't have a lot of experience with them.

One thing I learned from photographing my friend's baby is to try to use poses that give you a perpective of how small they are. At 3 months the baby probably isn't totally tiny but having the baby grab Dad's finger in his fist is adorable and it shows how small his hands are.

So, you basically accepted a job you have no idea how to do?

We all were virgins once. This isn't as critical as a wedding that can't be repeated.

They are TOUGH at 3 months...and they made it look so easy for my oldest son! I got some cute sleepy pictures of my oldest myself and my second oldest. My third happened to be 3 months...okay closer to 3.5 months for these shots. I think we were just lucky it was around Christmas 2005.
This baby was exactly 3 months...around Christmas 2006.
See if Mom is willing to do some photos with baby. I had that done with my daughter who proved to be most uncooperative if I put her down at ALL!
I meant to add that at this age, most babies can grasp something...a rattle or some small toy. It is a milestone that you can catch for Mom if baby can do it. Even fewer babies can lift their heads while on their tummies. My little guy at the top popped his head up for about 2 seconds and I was lucky to snap that. The little guy on the bottom was VERY good at holding up his head. At this age, I would say it is all about milestones.
Ooops...even more to add...lighting...
Christmas 2005 was flash mounted on top of camera only with some incandescent light and even less natural light. The backdrop is a shiny white curtain.
Christmas 2006 was natural light and flash mounted on top of camera.

It's called Trial by Fire - most often the best way to learn and to rise to the occasion.
I'm thinking, babies are cute on their own. If you can get it to not wiggle too much - maybe have something pretty and shiny to have mom hold to catch baby's attention? |

There's always a first time for everything and I personally think enough of the people on here (especially fotoman_forever, he's helped me alot) to ask advice so I can get it right the first time and not have to retake.

Here are a few from the last baby shot I did.
I thought I had more in my portfolio on here. Here is a link to the whole session.

I really enjoy these types of shoots. I find it best to make them comfortable. Put them in natural positions. Either laying down or being held. Also I love shots of body parts, hands, feet etc.

so any pictures of the shoot yet? How'd it go.
Young ones can certainly be rough, I took the picture I'm using as my profile pic when he was barely 3 hours old and you can tell he was already being difficult lol. There are times I would MUCH rather work with this age then the ones that can't sit still to save their lives.
I had a family friend come over with her 4 kids to do Christmas pictures and we couldn't get the second youngest to do anything we asked. If he did finally stop moving around he wouldn't be looking at us, if he was looking at us he'd be making a crazy face or flat out covering his face. Of course this was upsetting his mom which also started affecting the baby...it was fun I tell you what.
Hope the shoot went well. |

It's funny that you put up Christmas pictures because I was going to suggest an idea for Christmas shots. I took my newphews and niece in to have group photos done for their parents for Christmas and we stuck the 1-year-old in a box that was wrapped like a present. The box had a large piece of styrofoam for him to sit up on. I actually wrapped the box up myself and brought it in to the studio. The photographer liked the idea so much that she asked to keep the prop. |
