I am going to begin shopping around for a new lens soon... I would really like to have a wide angle that will do both group shots and landscapes...
Any suggestions??
P.S. I would really like a GOOD lens, and don't care about the cost :)
Fire away homies :) |

Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L. Can't go wrong with that one. The 17-40mm f/4L is good too if you need to save some money.

I wish I could say that and mean it.

| Canon 17-40mm f/4L or Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II or if you wanna stay with EF-S lenses the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 |

I use the Tamron SP 17-35mm for my group shots (tried both the Canon 17-40mm and the Tammy at the same time and could find no reason to pay the extra bucks for the canon)
I don't have the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm 2.8 but it looks like a really good replacement for the 18-55mm that you have in your bag. If it performs as well as the 17-35mm then it is a keeper.

| When I was out shooting landscapes this weekend, I found that 17mm wasn't quite wide enough for me on a 1.6x crop body. Sigma has a 12-24 that will fit on both FF (5D) and crop (XT, 30D, etc) bodies. But you lose the longer end of the 17-40. |

JoJo I tried to sell you my 17-40 when I had it.
10-22mm is next on my list.
You could buy this lens:

| I have the 10-22 and whilst I really like it, I don't think it will meet your needs as even at 22mm there is quite a bit of distortion that is visible for group shots. |

Looks like you have the kit 18-55 - so is the 18 wide enough for you? If so, there are a myriad of zoom lenses that start at 16-18mm, probably the best of which are the previously mentioned 16-35 and 17-40, or the EF-S 17-85.
If that's not wide enough, look at the super wide options, like the 10-22 and 12-24 mentioned here. Though as Sara pointed out, they may cause too much distortion for people shots. |

I believe it will be the EF 16-35 f/2.8L or the EF-S 17-85
It will be a gift so I will suggest the first but leave the second on the list :) hehe
THANKS GUYS!! :D |

Aha, now if you want a good lens, and don't care about the cost, the 17-55 2.8 IS would be my first choice. But, you have to REALLY not care about the cost. :)
(edit - oops, this lens is not an L lens)

| Oops - the 17-55 f/2.8 was also the one I was thinking of, but cited the 17-85 above. |

I totally agree! I love that lens, but wouldn't use it for group shots. |

I really recommend the Canon 10-22. It my most used and most favorite lens. I don't think the 17-55 is wide enough.
I use the 10-22 for school events and you just cannot beat it...you can get everyone in.
