Hi David,
I like this shot better in color than in B+W. your edit seems too high in contrast. The original seems to need the following:
- A little "clarification" using USM
- A little more sharpening
- Slightly cooler tones (curves adjustment)
- A soft-focus effect works very nice (blur 5.0px, fade to 33%)

If you'd like, I can post an exmple of how it looks with the above.

What i love about the shot is the innocence that you've captured in the grils smile and the boy hiding his face, what a precious capture of feeling and emotion! I also like the color version better.

They are cute! :-) I think for such a happy photo the colourful is better. :-) I love the emotions on their faces. :-)

Hey David,
That is a cute picture, I personally like the original one in color the best.

Of the three, I too like the original one too. The edited ones have too much contrast, and the grayscale version makes the splotches on their faces too obvious; they aren't as apparent in color.

But the original could use some processing: try using Levels and adjust just the black input levels for the three channels separately: set Red to 24, Green to 27, and Blue to 30. This darkens the dark areas without affecting the mid and light tones, and corrects the slight color cast. A slight USM would also be useful, but not too much; the mood of the photo calls for a little softness, and again you don't want to emphasize the splotchy lighting on their faces.

I agree with some comments, too much contrast in the edited version and I like the color version better. I do find your original looking like a scan of an old 35mm wich is a good thing to me. If you want to edit, I myself like using levels, if don't know how to use it, auto level is a good starting point. Unsharp mask (500% 0.2 px radius, no treshold) and i had some red in the saturation window.
