We're getting close. Has a meeting time for the Visitors Center been decided on yet? Is there some identifying item we should wear to be able to recognize one another (everyone in the park has a camera)?

Well it looks like I'm out. We've been told to make plans on being here permanently, so I'm looking at a trip back to Philadelphia to arrange a moving company, getting some work done on the house, and trying to get it sold. Big money drain.

I'd still love to get together with folks either on the front end or back end of the trip. Beers and brauts maybe?

Geez, Nikolai, just how many vacation days do you get!? :) I don't think you've ever missed a GTG anywhere on the globe!

This sounds like an awesome trip -- looks like one of the best-planned ones I've ever seen! I wish I could make it; we drove to Key West last summer and loved it. It would be a blast to make a week out of photographing that area!

Be sure to say hi to the Cat Man at Mallory Square for me!

3 weeks a year. The trick is to use them wisely. :)

I have been trying to work something out so I could join you guys. I have yet to make a GTG and this one would have been spectacular. But unfortunately, I just don't have the vacation time available to make it. I will however be looking forward to all the great photos and stories when you guys return! Have a great one!

Also helps to be in the Northeast where you're within 4 hours drive of 4 major cites. :)

Not good news from here. A family situation, not quite an emergency has come up, and I will be leaving for Saltville Va in a couple of hours. The trip is going to eat up the time off from work that I had planned to be with everyone in the Keys.
There is still a possibility of making one day of the Keys run, but it does not look too good at this time. If nothing else, I may be able to see everyone at the Anhinga trail meeting.
I will need a contact number, just in case I can get away long enough to run down there. It's about 4 hours from here. Someone can PM me if they would like to be the contact so that I can catch up with the group. I have a cell number for Robert (Yakatme,) but would like a second one for backup.

Oh, and some good news too! I may get invited to be on a support team going to run the Baja 1,000 (miles thru the desert) off road race in Nov, which would trump the keys trip for the time off. I will know more about that this week I think.

Does anyone what to buy Nikon 70-300 ED f4-5.6 (non VR)? I can bring it with me so you could test it and make sure it is working properly. Not sure how much to ask for but make me an offer.

Meeting places and times for the first day of this GTG

On Tuesday, the first day of this GTG, it looks like most of us can get an early start. All except for Eric, Nikolai and their company, will be meeting at the Ernest F. Coe Visitors Center at the Southeast entrance to Everglades National Park at 10:00 a.m. From there we can make the short trip to the Anhinga Trail for some closeup shots of Everglades wildlife.

Eric and Nikolai can be in the area by 12:30, but that's a little late in the day to not be on the way to the keys. So we will meet up with them at the Burger King on US-1 in Florida City 1/4 mile after the end of the Florida Turnpike at 12:30. (I'll PM the directions to them)

From there we will start our trip through the Florida Keys. The first planned stop that I suggest would be the Wild Bird Center just south of Key Largo. Feeding time is 3:30 which is a sight to see. Even with a few unscheduled stops along the way we should easily get there by then.

The hotel for the first two nights is 20 minutes further down US-1. I will have to leave by 3:00pm to pick up my son from school. I have been unable to arrange for someone to get him to and from school and to care for him during this GTG. Since his grandfather passed away this summer, his grandmother has taken too much time off of work to be able to help me out. She has always been there in the past and I was counting on her for this trip.

I won't be able to stay overnight until Friday. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I can meet up with you at 10:00 a.m., but I have to be back in Miami by 3:40pm on both of those days. On Thursday the GTG will be moving on to Marathon which is too far for me to return from, so I'll meet everyone for part of the trip to Marathon with a stop at Robbie's to feed tarpon by hand. Late Friday morning I'll join everyone in Marathon and will be able to continue with the GTG through late afternoon or early evening on Sunday, Oct 8th.

I apologize for not being able to be the full time "tour guide" that I had intended to be. But I'll get you all started and meet up with you as soon as I possibly can which will be on the second day in Marathon. Besides, you can't get lost. There is only one road in and out of the Keys.

I'll PM everyone with the meeting times and places.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all again and meeting those of you I haven't met yet.

The flight went well. We are here and enjoying your warm liquid sunshine, even after dark.

Warm rain is a great experience.

See you all tomorrow - or when you join up.

Glad you like the warm rain. Looks like there will be plenty to enjoy this week. But hey, it's the rainy season. I have been trying to decide whether to bring a rain coat. I've decided to just get wet. As you point out, it's warm rain. See you in about three hours.

Yeah, and these scattered thunderstorms make for some great skies and backgrounds, especially for sunrise and sunset shots. In the calm before the storm you can get some great reflections shots of them on the calm water.

I'm just about on my way to the Everglades and the first meeting point. I'll be dropping Chris off at school and going directly to the visitor's center.

I'll see you all shortly.

Funny, I lived in Marathon for a year and I don't recall any warm rain. Probably doesn't matter anyway, sun is shinning in Miami today!
