So now a different, but related, question:
I'm sold on waiting for the release before buying a 30 or 40D... Assuming the 40D has relatively basic upgrades such as 10mp and the dust shaker system, is it worth the extra money to go for the 40D over the (hopefully even cheaper than now) 30D. Logically the 30D seems like the better choice, but I'm an early-adopter at heart and it pains me to purposely buy an older model. But I do want to also buy nice lenses... :) Thoughts? Does anyone have the dust shaker and have you noticed a difference?

IMO when you get in the range of 6MP or more you will never be able to tell the difference on a printed image unless you are printing billboards. I have a print 16X20 taken with my S1 3 Megapixels camera that is hanging over my fireplace.

Naturally, it depends on the prices of the new and old models after the release. But I'm personally leaning toward getting a cheaper 30D and spending money on lenses. I think most people will echo this sentiment. I agree with you - I don't think the upgrades (10mp, dust system) are going to be that earth shattering.

I guess we'll just have to see... Maybe as little as 1 week now...

If you're talking about the original 1D, it's 6 years old, only 4 megapixels, and I can't find a place to buy it - assumedly you have to buy it used from someone.

Other than the full-frame sensor, there's not much going for it...

if ur going for the old megapixel scam then, your right, the higher the megapixel the better. you can easy blow up a good 20x30 and come out with a great picture.

I personally can't see spending a grand on a six year old camera, especially a digital camera. It could break tomorrow and I'd be out a grand. OUCH!

It was a great camera in it's time, but for picture quality now... no.

Besides, the megapixel "scam" really only applies to P&S cameras, not (at this point) APS-C sized or full-frame sensors.

Oh and to answer questions above. I'd only go cutting edge on bodies if I already had all the glass I lusted for. Wait for the 40D to be released, buy a cheaper 30D and spend the extra on glass.

Nothing wrong with picking up a Rebel XT now and either selling it later or keeping it as a backup.

I am totally confused. How do you get a 5D for $500 more than a 30D?

Sorry, I calculated the wrong way round from $ to Euros, so it will be a difference of approx. $ 1.200
assumed price for 40D - Euro 1.299 vs. street price 5D - Euro 2.199
