I have to studio strobes (dont know the models, just know that they are WHITE LIGHTNING) and I am thinking I want to get softboxes for them, but my dilemna is that I cant decide if I need or want them.
So im thinking that I might make my own, but that can cost anywhere from $10-$50, and the damn things are only $100 to begin with.
Is a soft box something that I will be able to use enough to justify the purchase, or should I make my own at first, see if I can come up with enough uses and go from there? |

| I have been working with umbrella strobes all summer and all i know from that is that i really really want to buy myself a softbox instead of the umbrellas....or maybe a softbox and an umbrella....i dunno....i would say get the softbox because they are cool :-D |

| Haha. I have the umbrellas already too. I think I am going to see how I can build one very inexpensivelly and see what happens. |

| You'll use it enough to buy one but it couldn't hurt to make one just for the fun of it. |

you will definately find many uses for a softbox if you buy or even build one. I have a 60 inch rectangular box a 22 inch circular pan aka beauty dish and two 20 inch square that I use for video.
I can tell you now that the 60 inch is too big for small areas it takes up alot of space bit bulky and a bit of a pain to move around and adjust. However the end results make it worth the extra work.
I find that I have been using the 22 beauty dish more than the 60 for three reasons.
1. it is not near as bulky I think it is 7 inches deep compared to nearly 3 feet on the 60 inch.
2. very easy to set up.
3. round catchlight in eyes vs rectangular.
