I have to studio strobes (dont know the models, just know that they are WHITE LIGHTNING) and I am thinking I want to get softboxes for them, but my dilemna is that I cant decide if I need or want them.

So im thinking that I might make my own, but that can cost anywhere from $10-$50, and the damn things are only $100 to begin with.

Is a soft box something that I will be able to use enough to justify the purchase, or should I make my own at first, see if I can come up with enough uses and go from there?

Haha. I have the umbrellas already too. I think I am going to see how I can build one very inexpensivelly and see what happens.

You'll use it enough to buy one but it couldn't hurt to make one just for the fun of it.

you will definately find many uses for a softbox if you buy or even build one. I have a 60 inch rectangular box a 22 inch circular pan aka beauty dish and two 20 inch square that I use for video.

I can tell you now that the 60 inch is too big for small areas it takes up alot of space bit bulky and a bit of a pain to move around and adjust. However the end results make it worth the extra work.

I find that I have been using the 22 beauty dish more than the 60 for three reasons.
1. it is not near as bulky I think it is 7 inches deep compared to nearly 3 feet on the 60 inch.

2. very easy to set up.

3. round catchlight in eyes vs rectangular.
