Somehow I seem to find the really funky interesting stuff BEFORE or way AFTER the challenge. F'r instance, last February, a friend took me to an abandoned mine, and just inside the entrance, there were icicles growing UP from the floor. None on the ceiling. Conditions have to be just right, and they don't last too long, but they feel like NG-type subjects to me... what do you think?

Would have been a good subject. Must be quite a temperature gradient from floor to ceiling.

And there was nothing dripping down from the ceiling? Very interesting!

Extremely "cool", pun intended. As paul sez, the temperature gradient must have been significant. I assume it happens because the cold outside air sinks down the shaft (along the floor) and gets warmed , then rises back up (along the ceiling). The water dripping from the ceiling is then caught in a "cup" at the top of each ice stalagmite and freezes layer-wise.
I'd bet this works only in a narrow temperature range.

Great shots and subject. However, in the NG challenge you couldn't explain what they were and too many people would vote it lower just because they had no clue what it really was. Maybe, maybe not? I haven't been here very long, but it seems the "what is that" shots don't seem to do well.

In this weather, what else can any of us do for this challenge. I'm really upset cause I have a great idea for it but can;t go anywhere bc of the snow/sleet/rain crap thats coming down.

Curses!
