Photography on the Cheyenne River Reservation

13 Aug 2007 00:08Over the past two years, the My View Point photography has served more than 50 youth, aged 6-18 on the Cheyenne River Reservation. The students photograph daily, develop their own film, and print their images in an onsite darkroom. The program is made possible entirely by donations and needs your support. All donations are tax deductible as the program is run through the Sioux YMCA, a non-profit organization. there is an online wishlist for supplies: //www.bhphotovideo.com/WishList/17734A8B0D&BI=28

If you have point and shoot cameras (film or digital)that are outdated or that you have replaced with newer models weâd love to have them.

Please send them to: My View Point Photography Program C/O Claudia Randall 1 YMCA B St. Dupree, SD 57623
OR

If you live in the New York City area I would be happy to pick them up (Emily: 347 451 7095).

(please be sure to include your name, address, and the $value of your donated equipment for tax deduction purposes).

This year the program will expand further when guest instructors teach a variety of courses at different points throughout the year: In mid August Suné Woods, a New York based video artist / photographer and teacher at the International Center of Photography will teach a digital photography workshop.

From late august through September Keisha Scarville, a New York based photographer and teacher at the International Center of Photography will spend her second summer on the reservation teaching a class in the traditional darkroom.

Emily Schiffer, the programâs founder, will be teaching three traditional black and white darkroom workshops, one in the fall, winter, and spring.

Tess Korobkin, recent Yale graduate and New York based artist will teach a mural painting class during the winter.

Hanifa Haris, a photography student at Parsons School of Design will join Schiffer in the spring.
