Does anyone have a makeshift/home made flash stand that they have found to work well. Im thinking something that would fit on to the flash using the hot shoe attatchment?

Yup, made one of those myself. I have an old tripod head sitting around (wasn't strong enough from my DSLR and lenses so I got a bigger one) that I mounted on to a T-joint. I can swivel the flash around and adjust the height fairly easily. I even jury-rigged an umbrella holder to the tripod head. Dirt cheap and works well enough for a home studio.
