Being in the market for a new camera, I went to my local camera store to compare, in-hand, the Canon 10D and the Nikon D100. I was able to look at the D100, but they had no 10D's. They told me there was a waiting list for them and that they had 15 people ahead of me. They also said that no one would have them in stock. I am wondering if there is a nationwide shortage of 10D cameras for some reason? Has anyone else seen this?

Spaz, I'm in a similar situation. For the last month I've been going to a few camera stores looking at the 10d and D100's. Problem is, they never have them there! In fact, I was at a local Ritz today - they had the D100 but no 10d or Rebels. A couple of weeks ago the guy told me they sell as fast as they get them (10d's and Rebels).

I'm hoping to make a decision within a week as to what I will buy. What are you thinking? Are you leaning toward the D100 or the 10d and why? They appear pretty similar to me. The 10d does have more film speed settings. What will you buy?

Best Buy. Check it out online, you can order from there. We went to one that didn't have any - they called another store that had one and we went and got it. (I think it was the last one in Virginia! Just kidding!)

Anybody ever deal with www.royalcamera.com ?

Their prices lead me to believe they are selling grey market goods - I've heard of some less than reputable dealers selling only the camera body - no battery, no strap, no manual, etc. They try to reel you in with a low price and then charge for what they call "accessories" that are standard everywhere else....I have no idea if the above site does this or has some other catch...but they are advertising the D100 for $1019, and the 10D for $1079. THERE MUST BE A CATCH. I have not called them to investigate, just found them after a quickie internet search.

Just curious if anyone knows their scheme.

You need to look at this.

Thanks kirbic.

As I suspected. Would've been fun to call them though and hear their pitch - especially if they started swearing at me like some of the reviews suggested!

I'm not making a purchase for a little while. I need to wait for my bonus, but I will be in the next couple months.

I think I'll get the 10D because it will suit me better. It has lower noise at all ISO's, lower noise on long exposures (4+ minutes), built-in PC sync terminal etc. I also am somewhat familiar with the way Canon lays things out since I have 2 Canon cameras already. I also own a 420EX flash unit that I use with my G5 that will work with a 10D.

I do want to get one in my paws and get the feel of it to make certain that I will like shooting with it before I lay out all those Benjamins. I'm planning to buy the battery grip, remote control, spare battery and 3 or 4 lenses all at once.

I recently (1-12-04) ordered a Canon 10D and a Canon EF 35-350L lens from B&H Photo's web site at www.bhphotovideo.com. I tried to order sooner, but they had the camera backordered. So I kept checking back with their web site until they had some available, then ordered as fast as I could. UPS still has my order and is supposed to deliver it tomorrow (1-19-04). I'm counting the hours.

I just checked their site and unfortunately they seem to have sold all they had in stock. It might be worth it to check them daily.

Other web retailers I've heard good things about are...

Adorama - www.adorama.com
17th Street Photo - www.17photo.com

Unfortunately none of them currently have the camera in stock either.

Good luck!
