I'm taking an engagement photo of my sister and her fiance. I will be taking it down by a beach. Background include beach, water, lighthouse, rocks, standard beach stuff.

Any advice for postures, angles, etc? How about time of day?

This photo may be put into the newspaper, but will be used more for a large print for people to sign at the wedding, so I'll be shooting for a BW large print.

Thanks,
Paul

I figure there are three ways of handling engagement photos:

1) Take control. Treat it like a portrait session. Pose them, control the light, control the backgrounds, make it perfect.

2) No control at all. Let them "be who they are" with each other. This is more of a photo journalism approach. You tell them to forget the camera and just interact with each other (no looking at the camera, they should be looking at each other).

3) A little bit of both. Take control by putting them into scenarios you want to photograph. Pose them from time to time, but the rest of the time, let them interact naturally with each other. Some of the images will be of them looking at the camera, some will not.

My preference is for #3. But each photog has their own style.

Hate to bump, I think I posted too late at night. Thanks to those who sent me a private response.
