Are there any photoshop actions where a certain variable can be set to change randomly during a batch process?

For example: 'resize horizontal 100>=300' - 'usm' - 'save'

This seems like something pretty basic so there must be something for it somewhere. I would be using it so I can quickly create a photo collage with varying sizes without having to resize each on separately, because that would take aaaaaaaaages!

The only way I know of to introduce randomness to an action is to have the action stop at the appropriate point and then let the user make changes.

If you look at the menu of actions, each action (and most, but not all, steps in an action) have two small boxes to the left.

The one to the furthest left, the one that shows a checkmark, lets you turn specific steps in an action on and off. (So if you have an action that's perfect in every respect except one step, just turn off that one step and you have the perfect action.)

The next box in is generally blank. If you click on it, a little red icon will appear -- meant to look like a dialogue box. If that is turned on, the action will pause at that step and let you make any changes you'd like in that specific dialogue. So, for instance, if you've used levels in an action, instead of every step applying exactly the same amount of change, you can have it stop each time and you set the amount of change to the levels as appropriate to that image.

Not the answer you wanted, and perhaps info you already knew....

No I didn't know this, and it sounds helpful for the type of thing I'm trying to do. Thanks :)

You could use scripting within Photoshop 7, whether or not this is implemented in CS or not I don't know.

You could also use mogrify, which is part of ImageMagick. There are various language APIs available too.

You can create your own
How to
Also on this forum, I described in detail Here
You are also able to use background images if you want. By making a pic in this type of file the size of the page, then putting smaller pics "over it." Lots of options, overlaying photos, etc.
