In looking at the results of the December Free Study challenge, I noticed that crabappl3's recent portfolio additions include the original of the 'Chairman Of The Board'. Having noticed this, I think it would neat to have a side by side comparison link added to the winning (member challenge) entries so we could quickly/easily see what type of transformation (if any) took place to achieve the given ribbon.

I second that, but it should be for tutorial proposes only, so not mandatory for the winners and possible for others too. Maybe just a link to the original in the "photographic information" section would be enough.

Of course they would have to make the original invisible until after challenge...

This is indeed a wonderful idea, though it could, over time, take up a lot of space in our portfolios. We'd either have to not include the "originals" as part of our space allotment, or have a way to increase the allotment.
There would really be very little intervention needed by the user, since the submission of the original is already needed for the top 5. the image submitted for verification coud simply be compressed (hopefully better than on DPC Prints) and displayed. The user could check/uncheck a box upon submisson of the original to allow or disallow the display of the original.
Speaking of space allotments, it's been suggested before, but we really do need a way to increase our portfolio space. I find I'm 80% full, and I really don't have a lot of stuff in there.

I would suggest to make it purely voluntary and the resized, thus small original has to go into the users portfolio. It should be placed there after the voting is over if he/she likes and there should be just the possibility to link this image to the challenge submission.
It should be made that way that as soon as this image is deleted, the link on the challenge image is gone. In this way one is able to get portfolio memory back without causing confusion.

I am suggesting that my idea only apply to the 'winning images' for which the 'originals' are already manditory and in the hands of the DPC staff. I think these winning examples would prove to be very educational and help all of see how good our images could/may be (I believe this why we adopted the new editing rules in the first place, no?).

(I'm surprised the forementioned idea didn't generate more responses?)

I agree that it would be an interesting and good idea if the photographers chose to do so. It wouldn't be something done by the site council because the photographer would want to resize the photo before putting it into his portfolio, rather than taking up a meg of space. Also, not everyone has a portfolio here. But I would definitely encourage those who want to start doing this to do so!
