| i checked and really couldnt find a thread with this debate in it. i was looking for a nice prime lens for some surfing/sponging shots and am stuck on these two rivals. i like the 400 cause its non is( im shooting in earlier conditions 5:30am) and im fine with the f/5.6, plus, there are nearly half the elements which means a faster focus to catch that ARS. second, liked how the 400 was like 100$+ cheaper than the 300 and that could go twards a 1.4x kenko on the 400mm which would be incredible over 600mm equivilant f/7.3 or so. but i really would only get the 300 without the IS but it is extremely hard to find new. im planning on going with the 400 but thought it would help clear my mind before i make a move i might regret. well thanxs for ur response. |

At long focal lengths from 300 upwards, IS is a godsend in terms of just stabilising the image for proper composition instead of having the image jumping around all over the place. The combination of the Canon 300mm f/4L IS and 1.4X TC works extremely well.
