I entered a local contest this summer and just found out I won second prize. Long story, but some of you might understand.
This is the third year for the competition and it's a very nice juried contest for amateurs and professionals (not separate divisions.) It's sponsored by the local Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park. I won first prize the first year, was away on my trip west last year so didn't enter, and only entered two this year. (You can enter up to three.)
The "sort of" in the title is because it's been an odd time with this contest. First of all, the two week period of time we had to shoot the photos wasn't the best of weather. Then, I only liked two as possible entries. My strongest entry was a b/w PS conversion that I just couldn't find a place to get a perfect print from. I know it's not going to be exactly what's on the monitor, but I was really disappointed in the bw tones. It just looks so much better on the monitor. I entered it anyway and that's the one that got second place (a $100 prize.)
Today was the exhibition and announcement of prizes. Exhibition 10-2 w/ the distribution of prizes around 2:00. Because of work, I didn't make it out there until 1:45. Apparently the organizer wasn't feeling well, so they closed up everything and left before 1:00! The first year, they had a very nice display set up with the winners in the center of the room on easels and other prints around the room. It was very pleasant talking with all the other photographers and receiving the check in a nice brief little event.
The entry gate lady let me into the small "tea room" building where they had the event. They had given her the names of the winners (three prizes). She read them, but my name wasn't on the list. She let me in anyway to get my photos and see whatever else was still there. The three winners were just propped on a few chairs and the others were stacked on a table. Mine WAS the second place winner....and they had given her my name wrong (even though it was neatly typed on the back entry form.) No one was there, so I just took my pictures and went home :( I guess I'll have to call their office Monday for the check and make sure they have the right name on it!
So I'm excited....sort of :) On the plus side as well, the photo that received first was a very nice shot and was deserving of the first place award. That's what I like about the juried type contests.

I went to pick up my check today....and found out I had won FIRST place - not second! That doubles the prize money to $200. Not quite sure why it was so disorganized this year, but I'll take it! :) |

Congrats! You deserve all the good feeling you can muster. The fact the contest was disorganized doesn't take away from your winning! :)
