I just bought one of these:

//www.ringflash.cz/en_eshop.php

from

//www.fixationuk.com

where my 20D was being fixed.

Looks interesting - no chance to play with it properly yet but I will post some pics soon.

Looks like you bought the last one! I will be interested to see how it performs (although it isn't much use to me at the moment as I have the 430 speedlight). The website looks interesting - into my bookmarks; thanks for the heads up.

Why is a 'ring' 'flash' so good?

Well, for macro photography, they surround the subject with light, creating little shadow.

From wikipedia:
Its most important characteristic is providing even illumination with few shadows, as the light from the 'flash' reaches the subject exactly straight-on from the lens. Thus it is useful for photographing coins, stamps or small anatomical features in medical contexts.

They are en vogue in some circles for portrait photography too. It does create interesting portraits.

About USD 175.

Cheap compared to the Elinchromversion starting at around USD 1800. Also probably not as good, but I'm not going to be the one to buy both in order to make the comparison...

Sigma EM-140 DG 'flash' is just over 300 bucks.

Its a macro 'flash' but looking at its deign it looks more like the multi light macro 'flash' from nikon then it does a full ringflash.

I have/had one of these and it has 2 modeling lights and 2 'flash' tubes. Its not a true Ringflash but works very well for macros.
