Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship Promoting Human Rights Journalism Region :Worldwide Country :United States Topic :International Experience
This fellowship, sponsored by the International Women̢۪s Media Foundation (IWMF), brings one female journalist from any country in the world to the United States from September to May to participate in a tailored study program. Fellows will have access to universities in Boston, Mass., the Boston Globe and the New York Times daily newspapers. Applications are accepted from female print, broadcast or Internet journalists with a record of human rights and social justice reporting.
IWMF offers the annual scholarship to one female journalist worldwide in honor of Elizabeth Neuffer, a Boston Globe correspondent and IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner who was killed in Iraq in 2003.

Clive Menell Fellowship Region :Sub-Saharan Africa Country :South Africa Topic :International Experience
The Clive Menell Fellowship is an annual award for two mid-career or senior journalists in South Africa. Fellows will participate in three weeks of discussions and studies on international media issues.
The fellowship takes place at Duke University̢۪s DeWitt Wallace Center for Communication and Journalism in the United States. The African fellows have the chance to meet and share experiences with colleagues from major media in Europe and the U.S.

Clark Mollenhoff Award for Investigative Reporting Region :North America Country :United States
The Clark Mollenhoff Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting is given annually to the best newspaper or magazine story that conforms both to the definition of investigative reporting as originally defined by Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) and to the professional standards articulated by Clark Mollenhoff in his critiques of journalism craft. The award carries a cash prize of $5,000. A bronze award and a check are presented to a newspaper reporter, team of reporters, or an individual newspaper showing initiative similar to Mollenhoff̢۪s.
The Mollenhoff Award is named for the late Pulitzer-Prize winning reporter who conducted groundbreaking investigations into the influence of organized crime in American society. The Institute on Political Journalism, an intensive summer study and internship opportunity in Washington, D.C., sponsors the award.
Guidelines:
1) Submit a brief cover letter on your letterhead, identifying the award you're applying for and a paragraph outlining the story or series.
2) Submit a story or series of stories - no more than 20 - in standard eight-and-a-half-by-eleven paper size.
3) In a separate section, you may submit any additional stories or back up material considered pertinent.
4) There is no entry form; there is no entry fee.
5) Three copies of each entry are required.
6) More than one series for a reporter, team or newspaper is permitted, but each should be submitted as a separate entry.

Common Ground Media Fellowship Region :Sub-Saharan Africa Country :None Topic :Radio, Conflict Deadline :
African journalists are encouraged to apply for this fellowship, sponsored by the Search for Common Ground (SFCG). Awards of US$300 to US$1,000 are available for recipients. Print and radio journalists reporting conflict resolution are eligible, and receive funding to research and write on a topic that is directly related to peace-building or conflict resolution. Applicants must provide two samples of published work, a one-page summary of the story he or she plans to produce and a letter from a media outlet expressing interest in the story.

The Daniel Pearl Fellowships, in partnership with the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships (AFPF) and the Daniel Pearl Foundation, brings up to two mid-career foreign journalists to the United States to work in an American newsroom for six months. The program runs from March to September. The application deadline is September 1.
The fellowship program is named in honor of the late Daniel Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was murdered in Pakistan in 2002. Preference will be given to journalists from Pakistan, however, applications will also be considered from other areas where Pearl worked as a journalist. Douglas Tweedale Memorial Fellowship Region :Latin America
The six-week fellowship program will begin with a three-day orientation and professional program for the participant in Washington, D.C. The journalist then will depart for an extended assignment in the newsroom of one or more Spanish-language media organizations in the United States. A structured program will be designed to give the fellow the broadest possible exposure to professional principles and practices for news gathering and reporting used in leading media companies in the U.S. Because this will take place in a Spanish-language environment, the fellow will be able to write and produce news stories and become part of the newsroom team. The Fellowship may also include homestays with Americans. At the conclusion of the professional newsroom attachment, the participant will attend a wrap-up and evaluation program which will include trainer-training techniques so the participant will be able to share their new skills and experiences with colleagues when they return home.
Application and Selection Applicants should be early to mid-career journalists working at independent newspapers or news agencies in Latin America. They should be:

interested in improving their knowledge of the role of independent journalism and how it functions in a democratic society,

and dedicated to developing strong professional skills and ready to take on additional responsibilities with his/her employer.
Additionally, applicants must have enough proficiency in the English language to comprehend assignments and conduct their work and personal activities in an English language environment even though they will write their stories in Spanish.
Both direct applications and nominations from employers and other sources will be considered. In either case, an application must be completed and returned to the International Center for Journalists at the address below by June 5. Following the application deadline, the selection committee will be convened to chose the finalist. The Fellowship takes place in the United States in the last quarter of the year.
Program Costs The Fellowship will provide for international airfare to and from the U.S., domestic transportation within the U.S., a meal and housing allowance for the duration of the program, and supplemental health insurance. The program cannot accommodate spouses or other family members.
Duke University Visiting Media Fellows Program Region :Worldwide
Duke University annually offers fellowships to journalists worldwide interested in studying journalism, networking with other journalists, and examining the U.S. news media.
Potential applicants from sponsoring media organizations are selected by their respective companies, which provide funding support for the program. Other applicants are considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on both experience and financial support for expenses. Funding support from private foundations may be available for applicants from Eastern/Central Europe, and the former Soviet Union. Endometriosis Association Media Excellence Awards Region :Worldwide
The Endometriosis Association Media Excellence Award was established to encourage factual news media coverage that helps increase the diagnosis, treatment, and/or research of endometriosis, a serious chronic disease affecting over 5 million women and girls in North America alone. All journalists who have published or produced a story, or have received acceptance for a submitted piece about endometriosis are encouraged to participate.
Each year, one US$1,000 cash award is awarded to a journalist, from either the U.S. or abroad, for the best submission in each of five categories; daily and weekly newspapers, broadcast (radio and TV) news, magazines, medical or scientific, and internet or online.

This fellowship awards an experienced editorial writer US$75,000 to research, write, travel and/or study in any field, provided the fellow publishes work within 18 months of selection. Candidates must be currently working full-time as an editorial writer for a news publication in the United States.

Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award for Young Science Journalists Region :North America Country :United States Topic :Health, Science, Young Journalists
This annual award is presented to print journalists in the U.S. under the age of 30 who have published articles dealing with biological, physical, environmental, computer and space sciences. Articles covering technology, mathematics, and health and science policy are also accepted.
Up to seven published articles may be submitted for consideration. The award winner will receive US$1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to attend the annual four-day New Horizons in Science briefing organized by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing and the National Association of Science Writers banquet in late October.
The prize is named after the late Evert Clark, who worked as a journalist at BusinessWeek, The New York Times, and Newsweek; and the award founder and close friend Seth Payne, who worked with Clark at Business Week. The Poynter Institute, a U.S.-based journalism school, funds these fellowships which bring African journalists to the United States on extended visits and send U.S. journalists to South Africa and other countries on the continent to conduct journalism training sessions. International Journalism Exchange (IJE) Region :Worldwide
The International Journalism Exchange (IJE) is open to editors who have worked in journalism for at least five years, are currently employed by a daily newspaper and are proficient in English.
Priority is given to editors from countries in transition to democratic rule. The five-week program begins in Washington, DC with orientation and seminars. Fellows then begin a month long newspaper assignment that offers exposure to all departments of an American newspaper. The program concludes with a final evaluation in New York City. The 2006 program dates are: October 7 to November 11.
IJE was initiated in 1984 by the American Society of Newspaper Editors and has been administered by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) since 1990.

Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) Scholarship Fund Region :Latin America Country :United States
The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) offers scholarships for journalists through its scholarship fund. Remember that December 31 is the deadline to apply.
The scholarships are open to young journalists and students of journalism between the ages of 21 and 35. Applicants from Latin America, North America or the Antilles should have sufficient understanding of the language of the country in which they would like to study.
Among the established requirements, applicants must have completed their university studies before the beginning of the scholarship, which has a maximum duration of one year. In some cases, professional experience can be as little as three years. Latin American applicants should take Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Scholarship winners from Latin American or the Antilles will be able to study in any recognized school of journalism in the United States or in Canada for an academic year. Applicants should present a study plan and the work they will cover during the year abroad to the IAPA scholarship fund for its approval.
The North American scholarship winners will be able to study and work in any Latin American or Antillean country. In either case, they should have the approval of the IAPA scholarship fund. They must also:
1.) Take a minimum of three university courses;
2.) Participate in the scholarship fund̢۪s reporting programs;
3.) Present a thesis about some aspect of the country that they would visited. Applicants from the United States and Canada should have authorized documentation demonstrating their ability in Spanish or Portuguese.

The IRE Awards recognize the best in investigative reporting—by print, broadcast and online media. Categories include newspapers, television, magazines, books, radio, FOI work, student work and more.
International entries will be placed into appropriate categories by IRE staff. Contest judges can then move entries into other categories. IRE can award a special citation for deserving international work.
After judging, all entries are placed in IRE̢۪s Resource Center story library so that IRE members may learn from others̢۪ triumphs and troubles. The contest helps identify techniques and resources used by the entrants.

Jennings Randolph Program for International Peace Senior Fellowships Region :Worldwide Country :United States Topic :Conflict
The program offers 14 fellowships to professionals of varying backgrounds (including journalism). Priority is given to applicants who propose projects that promise to make timely contributions to the understanding and resolution of ongoing and emerging international conflicts. Fellows carry out their projects in residence at the Washington-based United States Institute of Peace and participate in public outreach efforts.

The McCloy Fellowships in Journalism bring U.S. and German journalists to network and research current political, economic and social issues for up to 28 days in Germany or the United States, respectively. The fellowships are sponsored by the American Council on Germany and cover pre-approved international and domestic travel along with a daily allowance of US$150. Journalists from Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine are among those who can apply for a six-week course in the U.K. on good governance.
The John Smith Fellowship Programme combines classroom study, work placements and visits. Those eligible include journalists and other civil society leaders.
Candidates should be 25 to 35 years old. The fellowship costs are fully covered, but fellows aren̢۪t allowed to bring spouse or children with them. Applicants must have English proficiency at IELTS level 6 or above.

Jon Davidoff Scholarships for Journalists Region :Worldwide, North America Country :United States Topic :Specialized Reporting, Basic Journalism, Study Abroad
The Jon Davidoff Scholarships recognize journalists worldwide who have exceptional talent. The Wesleyan Writers Conference offers the scholarships, which allow one journalist to attend their annual conference in June. During the conference, participants can interact with a team of experienced journalists, creative writers and poets in addition to the participants from around the world.
The scholarship allows participants to carefully critique their work in addition to giving them the opportunity to deepen their understanding of narrative and journalistic writing.

The Journalism for Tolerance Prize, organized by the International Federation of Journalists, is an annual competition among journalists from all sectors of media to promote the importance of tolerance and the defense of human rights, particularly when it comes to reporting on minorities. Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism Region :Worldwide Topic :Conflict, Human Rights
Journalists from developing or transition countries are eligible for the Kurt Schork Awards, organized by the Reuters news agency and the Kurk Schork Memorial Fund. One freelance journalist and one local reporter from a developing or transition country will receive US$5,000, each. The reports should focus on a conflict, human rights, border issues or any other controversial issue in a country or particular region.
The organizers created the prize in 2002 to honor the American war correspondent Kurt Schork, who was killed May 24 that same year in a military ambush while working for Reuters in Sierra Leone.
The awards are administered by the London-based Institute for War and Peace Reporting. The Lorenzo Natali Prize for Journalism, Excellence in Reporting Human Rights, Democracy and Development was established by the countries of the European Union in honor of the late Lorenzo Natali, vice president of the European Commission with special responsibilities for development issues. The prize, administered by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), is awarded to print journalists who have demonstrated a striking insight and particular dedication to the reporting of human rights issues within the context of the development process. McGee Journalism Fellowship in Southern Africa Region :North America Country :United States
Each year, the McGee fellowship provides the opportunity for a U.S. journalist to be posted to a southern Africa for three to four months to share his or her expertise with colleagues in the region—consulting in newsrooms, leading workshops or teaching at a university. Upon returning, the fellow will share his or her experiences through lectures, seminars and published articles. The fellowship is open to experienced media professionals (print or broadcast) or journalism educators and covers expenses while on assignment. MENA MEDIA TV Production Fund recipients can receive up to $20,000 for their productions that support increasing public dialogue and awareness on current and locally-oriented issues, including topics that are underserved by current media production. This program is funded by the US Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and administered through IREX and AmmanNet. Applications are due May 30, 2007.
The program is open to both individuals and production companies in the following countries and locales: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, the West Bank and Gaza.
Last year, MENA MEDIA̢۪s selection committee of media specialists awarded grants to 10 independent producers from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the West Bank, and Yemen whose film subjects ranged from interfaith marriages to the abuse of performance-enhancing steroids to the search for an Arab hero. Both male and female producers were among the recipients of the 2006 grants.
