I know there must be some info in the forums someplace, but I was unable to find any... so here I am.
I know that to the people who have been here for a while, having a generic or no explanation at all for the challenges is okay. But...to me, this really isn't enough. For example...
Still Life III: no description
Still Life II:This is a classic subject for many forms of art. Be creative and have fun!
Still Life: This is a classic subject for many forms of art. Be creative, and have fun.
Okay... although I am not unfamiliar with photography as a whole, I have always done more photojournalistic photography where this site leans more towards the artistic. The descriptions above don't tell me what is intended for a still life picture.
My entry for Still Life III, since I cannot discuss it yet, is more in the vein of a play on words. After getting 2 comments that told me that my picture did not fit the challenge... I looked even more in depth. Thankfully, one of my commenters explained it to me, and looking at all of the other entries while voting brought the point home.
Please... for those of us in the know-NOT, please give us more of a description. I know that asking questions that seem elementary to some of the folks on here seems rather ludicrous... better descriptions would probably cut down on the number of 'stupid' (although possibly needed) questions.
Please... for my sanity's sake... and maybe putting me over the 5.0 mark... spell it out for me. Okay ???

I can agree sometimes but in this case you could ahve looked at the top of the last 2 challenges and goteen an idea of what DPC considered still life. |

Actually I did... but what they had in common did NOT jump out at me. I am old...feel like I am going blind so please understand how an addled mind sometimes operates.
Edit to add smiley face
I will be more persistent in the future, but for new persons to the site...they may not realize they can do so, how to do so...or may be too shy to ask.

You will find that some challenges can have very picky voters and I tend to avoid those unless you have avery good idea of the challenge. Bokeh for example alwyas creates arguments.
There is often less of description to hopefully alow people to be more creative. Missing Link for example had two major meanings and with no description both ideas ribboned.

Most subjects - like "Still Life" can be googled for a WORLD of info -- far more than could ever be put in the description anyway.
Google Street Photography and see what I mean. :)

I agree and totally understand this point of view, but in the case of Still Life, the only meaning that seems to take precedence is the one but not of another. How is an idiot as I am differentiate between them?
Thank you for helping me by the way!! I am off to work now but will read any reply when I return!
Thanks

Descriptions mean nothing here.

So without a description, why is it people are still so narrow minded about what fits the challenges? I think that without a decription to act as a guide, people have a lot of latitude in their approach to each challenge. As mentioned previously, you can Google the challenge name and not only find the Webster's definition of it but see a myriad of other approaches to the topic. and YET, the voters will quickly mark down a shot if it doens't punch them in the nose with their relevance to the topic.
Personally I like to have a bit of a description but I don't ever feel limited to it.

Or sometimes they mean too much.
