Circle 2...
Wasn't going to submit this one... didn't like it.
I was out shooting at a local art park and this just seemed to be fitting for the rainy day, then I checked DPC and cropped it to make the circles stand out.
The umbrella is something I picked up in Malaysia to protect my gear when a storm blew in. It was less than a dollar and it's the only umbrella I've ever had that hasn't broken the first time I've used it.
The umbrella holder is OrdinaryAngel, also the person who made me enter this image. |

Ducky Challenge:
October 17th 2006:
I never thought that this would ribbon. I was very happy with the third place finish however as there was some pretty stiff competition in that challenge. QUACK!

Oh yea. Certainly not anywhere near your best shot. That's always a bummer!
My front page has been stuck the same for a looong time until this top 20 finish in natural light portrait... unless you have your settings to 4 main photos, lol. Then it just looks the same, I have mine to show 5. |

I really really like this shot, I had no idea it would ribbon though. I worked pretty hard on it to get it as perfect as possible and I feel like it is very well composed. I am also happy that my one ribbon was a self portrait, since I normally hate doing self portraits. Shows I am growing I guess. yay one ribbon wonders! |

Fitness, early April 2007...
I thought about entering this in the march free study instead, but I had another photo that I was fairly excited about (that didn't end up doing all that well). I was actually really worried that people would struggle to see how a rebel sport like snowboarding would equate to fitness, hence the rather lame title. I wouldve liked to name it something less cheezy, but hey... a ribbons a ribbon, right?
Fun trivia about this shot: I shot jpeg at this contest, instead of RAW...making this series basically unpublishable (the industry standard for snowboard mag submissions is DNG with a small jpeg proof). Need a reason to shoot RAW? Well, I don't anymore :-P. At least I got a blue ribbon for my efforts!

The Great Pumpkin Challenge:
This was a very pleasant surprise. My daughter and I carved the pumpkins for this shoot, using some commercial patterns. I lined the pumpkins with yellow tissue paper in order to even out the bright light and get the gorgeous glow that we see with our eyes. Still, I was very surprised when this image did so well. A ribbon in my 1st six months!
naldslc went in and increased his score on my shot just before the close of the challenge. It put my image into 3rd place while his finished in 4th place.
This past year, I voted one of his shots very high, which ended up placing his at a ribbon, while mine came in 4th. It seemed fair to see his get the ribbon.
I hate the idea of being a ONE ribbon wonder. I really want more ribbons. I even have 7 entries in the top 10, and 7 entries in the top 3%, and 2 above 7.0 entries that didn't ribbon. Just gotta keep trying. |

My only ribbon. Started out as third place, then first place got DQ'ed, so up I went to second. I guess this image is ok, but I'm sure my regular non-challenge stuff could never ribbon, and I tend to like those more. |

Well....I've placed top 10 two other times and top 20 eight more times. I just can't seem to break into ribbon territory with this one lone exception.
Hopefully I'll be shooting and entering more these days, so we'll see.

I work in the SOcial Justice field so this pic represents a lot for me and is especially cool that this one out of all, won a ribbon.

First, I'm honored to be in this group. Reading down the thread, I kept being surprised because I recognize many of the shots and I thought most of the photographers had won lots of ribbons.
Anyway, here's mine:
About a year ago I took pictures of three angles on this staircase, and I've been working them into challenges ever since. This was my personal favorite angle, so I was delighted it did well. It's my personal best score, only top 10, and only ribbon. I also owe my DPL team Critical Mass for the processing, which took it from a shot with potential to a ribbon.

Taken for a project that I did not keep up with, but it did give me my only ribbon.
I actually had to park a bit away and trudge through a kind of misty drizzle and the snow. Got there and realized I didn't have the CF card in my camera.
I drove home (about 20 minutes away), got the CF card as well as my Sony and went back for the shot. It was one of those times that I really made myself work at. I was a little concerned about all the moisture and my cameras and tried to keep eveything tucked into my coat. I was right along a very busy road and I am sure many folks thought I was nuts for taking photos of trees in that weather. The location is much less scenic than it appears in this small sample, but - as stated in the details - the reflection and the similarity of these trees struck me whenever I drove past.
I was very surprised by the response and I still am. I think it's a neat shot, but it's certainly far from one of my favorites. |
