Ok, this is not just me. Photos right out the camera look different when I preview them in windows then they do in photoshop cs2. Any ideas why?

After the edit in ps I get which doesn't look as good as the unedited in windows preview which looks way to dark in photoshop.

Both Windows and Photoshop has to use the same profile... If you are not calibrated Windows uses a standard sRGB profile and PS uses some Adobe sRGB(some number here). Set Windows to use the same one as PS.

If you are calibrated Windows is probably set to the calibrated profile and PS needs to be changed to the calibrated one.

What flavor of Windows are you running... I'm on Vista here an Color management is a bit different than XP.

I am running win xp pro here. Now wondering about investing in some hardware to calibrate colors.

If you're interested in photography it's pretty much required. Pick up a Gretag Macbeth Eye-One Display 2.

If I remember right... right click on your desktop and choose properties, I believe there is a tab for Display Settings (or something like that) should see an Advanced... button on that tab. After clicking that button you will see a Color Management Tab, clicking that tab will show you what color profile Windows is using.

You want this profile to match the profile that PS is using. PS is probably using something like sRGB IEC1966 or the likes... bottom line is Whatever windows is set to should be the same color profile that PS is using or vice versa.

Calibration is good because it will create a color profile that your printer can use... so what you see is what you print.
