I often shed a tear for those folks who use Internet Explorer and cannot benefit from my DPCmods (custom javascripts to enhance the DPC experience).

But hark! It turns out that a piece of software called Turnabout is in fact a decent knock-off of GreaseMonkey for IE! It's fairly easy for me to convert my scripts to support Turnabout because it implements some of the custom GreaseMonkey APIs. (Make sure to download the Advanced version)

What does this mean for you? Many of the DPCmods now work in Internet Explorer, and more will soon. I have updated my DPCmod page with instructions to use Turnabout. Please let me know if you'd like me to clarify anything.

Oddly, the Turnabout page says it's only for IE6, but it works perfectly in IE7 on my test machine. Turnabout is also much easier to install and use than Trixie, so I've removed Trixie from my page, and suggest that you use Turnabout instead.

Scripts that currently work in Turnabout for IE:
- Profile images (thread - the full version, with size options in your preferences page)
- New comments highlighter (thread)

The custom links mod works somewhat - you can create links but you cannot delete them.

The others (slideshow, keyboard voting, etc) don't work, but will if I add a little elbow grease.

Enjoy!

-Jeff

PS: _eug first pointed out Turnabout long ago when I first started writing DPCmods, but if I recall, it didn't work as well back then.

I can't imagine the IE crowd simply doesn't care... Maybe I should have titled the thread, "Paris Hilton: Macs vs. RAW vs. God -NSFW!" =D

LOL *bump*

Perhaps so ... do these work with the version of IE used by AOL?

I would love for somebody to let me know - I have no way of finding out. I guess it all depends on Turnabout's installation, and whether AOL's IE accepts plugins (which quite possibly it does not for security purposes).

Oh - I just added to the page: Make sure you download the Advanced version of Turnabout. Otherwise you cannot install 3rd party scripts, like mine!

I think there's a big difference in skill level between your average IE user and your average FF user. The mods might be beyond some folks.

Though a generalization, it's possible - even probable.

I also wonder if the mods aren't a bit hidden in the Web Site Suggestion forum. Maybe it's time to ask langdon if he'll put the DPCmod page on his Community Projects list.

If all else fails, show more screenshots! =D

Yes, screenshots help. I'm usually reticent to install anything onto a working system unless it's absolutely necessary -- I find the best way to avoid troubleshooting is to avoid trouble in the first place. : )

PS: I'm running Windows 2000 Pro, AOL 9.0 most of the time.

I do have older versions of both Firefox and Mozilla working here too ...

Very wise. =) I live by the same principal when dealing with Windows.

I will say that this particular program should only affect Internet Explorer, and is not something that will be running all the time, slowing down your machine, or adding itself to your system tray. It's a plugin, like Flash player or PDF reader.

I also went through the process of removing the program (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Turnabout, click Remove) and it was seamless. It even asked whether I wanted it to remove all my installed scripts.

I will also say (as I do on my DPCmod page) that you should disable the default scripts (or features) installed - you probably don't want them and they may change the way some websites look.

Here's a screenshot of the options menu that Turnabout has. Note that I've unchecked all the silly default features, and only my DPC scripts are enabled.

Can I ask a question (waves hand in the air)

Does it matter which Windows OS you use ?

My test machine right now is Windows XP, IE7. When I get home, I'll try Windows Vista IE7, and Windows XP IE6, and I'll let you know how that goes.

I don't have access to other versions of Windows... Perhaps somebody else could chime in.

Confirmed to work in IE6 under XP. It didn't have a toolbar button - use Tools->Turnabout Options to get to the options menu.
