You have nothing to lose by doing it for free, as long as they pay any costs to you. In place of the price they would pay you, if you charged, you get the experience and any possible exposure. Exposure cannot be understated, I've only done 3 photoshoots with friends but I've already had 3 other requests for photoshoots from friends of theirs (people I don't know...one girl's already said that she'd like shots of her kid, but only when she can pay for it). And I'm gonna do them for free too, because I enjoy doing it, I will be able to learn alot without any pressure, and their friends will see them.

So do it. They're friends, you get experience and exposure...they get pics.

Yeah, put it in writing and have it (ED: signed by all members), then notorized at a bank.

1) No disclosure of work done for free.

2) What they give you and all details as Size of ad or font-size/type, and for how long and which website url.

3) acknowledgement of age and any possible limitations.
such as all pending on the stipulations of your being allowed access to do photos.

I'm no lawyer, consult, find one for free initial consultaion. Many will do some "Pro Bono" work on certain cases or criteria.

Guys...keep in mind - he is young enough that he cant legally enter a binding contract.

Ive noticed one thing about this site is everything always gets taken alot deeper then it needs to.

Here is my best advice man...

Go shoot pictures of a band and have fun doing it. If the guys throw you some loot, thats cool, if not, at least you got some experience under your belt and some stuff for your portfolio.

You are 16, not 40, if this band screws you over, it sucks but the kids wont starve, you wont be homeless, etc. Hopefully its a band you like, if not, then well that sucks, but go to the show and enjoy yourself. Im sure youll be guest listed (if not the guys are just jerks and you shouldnt help them out), and just shoot some pictures and rock out.

Also, never underestimate the power a camera around your neck has when it comes to picking up girls at a bar...its almost as powerful as a microphone haha.

A contract with a minor can generally be cancelled by the minor or parent, but this does not prevent him from making a contract in the first place, nor it being enforceable against the other person.

I agree that people take themselves and photography probably too seriously most of the time. As you said - he should go have fun taking the photos. However, it would be wise to keep control of the images as far as possible just in case.
