thought this photo would have fared a bit better then it did. could be folks didnt see it as action, although both were shot with a fast shutter, and getting the lighting right wasn't easy.
no biggie, but though i'd post my alternative take.

To me your submitted image is the better one: the smoke forms a nice, closed figure, whereas in the other image it just goes through the image.
I still have to say that I do not see much action though, but for itself (without the challenge topic in mind) it's just great.

action in the sense the smoke is constantly moving, and changing. each frame produced a different image. give it a try.
they are lit with 3 60w halogens about 6 inches from the smoke.
and 1/400th was pushing it for stop action.
i snapped about 100 frames for these two images.
i understand not everyone sees the same as me. just posting my thoughts on it.
appreciate the feedback, and glad you like ;}

To me it appears that the lighting on the second one is better and it's also sharper possibly due to the way the smoke was moving. But I like the one you entered. I like the artistry formed by the smoke, there are lines that lead the eyes on to unlike the second one where I find my eyes wandering all over the it.

yeah thats what i thought too, but the unentered was a bit sharper.
the smoke was thicker is the reason i think. lighting was the same for both.
thanks
