These are all pretty near sunset the 3rd car over the jump I had set up at wrecked.... BAD One. It slowed everyone and everything down and the sun did not wait. I tired to keep PP down to a min Can I get some folks to take a look and see if I did ok with um. Before I move on to the rest of the photos.

Well close to sunset yet you managed to keep the action frozen, and i can't see any noise whatsoever which is great.
I'd say be mindful of whats in the background of the shot, as i much prefer the shots with the cars on their own, rather than the odd spectator or van in the background, cluttering and stealing emphasis from the subjects.
I really like them though, would have maybe been nicer if you could of (dared ?) get closer to them for a bit more impact and perhaps filling the frame with them.

It looks like alot of fun, i'd love a go!

Personally I think your shutter speed was a bit too fast. Besides the dust flying there isnt much movement shown in the wheels/tires which is always good to show motion. Somewhere between 1/400 and 1/640th is where I like to keep mine to allow some wheel blur while still getting sharp cars. I'd peak at skip portfolio and see if he has some of his great shots with Exif attached for examples.

I repositioned myself to the other side of the jump facing a smaller one. I had to use my 70-300mm to get these... I actually lost 45 min of shooting while I stayed by the driver I was afraid they would move him before the medics arrived (they didn't and he couldn't move himself -- good folks out there) . Being that close make you WANT to get away from the course lol It's hard for the other drivers to see and slow with all the dust about so I suffered frayed nerves :)

ya got some nice ones, and you got some dull ones. the best ones are the ones where you can tell the car is completely in the air. you need to find a vantage point that will allow you to really grab the moments. for example, if you were on a ladder shooting them eye-level while they are in the air coming off a jump. or finding a place where you can shoot up to really put them up in the air. what you don't want is a lot of standing eye-level perspectives.

also, shoot for motion. as matt mentioned, find a slower shutter and pan them through the jumps and landings. depending on available light, you might be anywhere from 1/125 to 1/400 (i don't think these guys are going to be going fast enough to get any blur if the shutter's any faster).

two more things to consider: 1) ditto the background comment. be mindful of what's back there. sometime, you have no choice, but when you do, you owe it to yourself to do something about it. 2) also, try shooting tighter. fill the frame with the subject. not all the time, but at least some of the time.

these are definitely high energy opportunities--grab that energy, let us taste the dirt ;-)
