All Nikon lenses are Nikkor and there are no special designations because they're all high-end. ;-)

The Nikon/Nikkor designations to look for would be AF-S for ultrasonic autofocus ("SilentWave"), ED for extra-low dispersion optics, and VR for vibration reduction. DX refers to lenses made specifically for digital/APS-C sensors.

Ah, thanks! I was wondering about that, and someone at some point told me Nikkor meant pro-level. Guess not.

So then Nikon's 70-200mm f/2.8 VR DG would be their answer to Canon's EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM? I own the Nikon, and I'm blown away by it, but I'm also new to SLRs and trying to understand what else is out there.

According to who?!? Ken Rockwell? Haha, cause we all know how trustworthy he is. Plus we all know that big white lenses with that sexy red stripe are way cooler than drab black. :)

For sue I have the older but still awesome 80-200 2.8 AF-S. Same optics no VR.

The next one you should think about is the 17-35 2.8 AF-S. It is another unbelievable lens. That and the 80-200 are my faves!

Haven't you and I discussed the 17-50 2.8 Tamron? I'm enjoying that one a lot. I think the Sigma 10-20 or Tokina 12-24 are next. Possibly in time for my trip to Vermont in a month.

Hiya Peter. brownsm said you two were friends when we went shooting earlier this week. :)

Groton Pond. It's about 2/3 of the way from MA to Canada and 1/3 of the way west from the NH border toward NY.

Here's a Google map of it.

Excellent - Enjoy yourself in "our" neck of the woods. I have a place in the Windsor area that we go to about once a month. Try and get over to Lake Willoughby if you have any time - it is about 50-60 miles from where you are going, but it is one of the most beautiful lakes in all of New England - mountains around it and deep clear water.

I will hope for dry and not humid weather and big puffy clouds for you on your trip.

Sounds lovely. My wife's great-grandfather built a cottage on Groton Pond (heaven help you if you call it Lake Groton) in 1913, and every generation since has grown up spending major chunks of each summer there. My wife and daughters go with my mother-in-law for several weeks ever August; I'll be joining them for 4 days before I head to NYC for a conference. Here's a snapshot:
