Ive noticed that no matter what the challenge topic is, there are at least 5 macro shots of bugs or flowers, no matter how they fit the challenge. Not a criticism, just a fact. Well maybe slightly a criticism.

those types of shots are certainly popular, i think maybe it's just a case of people shooting what they like or feel is their strength...

And it is defintely a strong point for a lot of them, the shots are often breathtaking, but its just like - c'mon now, bugs and flower macros arent the answer to everrrrrry challenge.

It is surprising how plants and bugs fit so many challenges. Next challenge, try seeing how a Macro shot will fit. You'll be amazed at how easily they do fit without any shoehorning. Plus, a lot people here seem to specialise in Macros.

Ive yet to enter a challenge, but whats the point of entering a challenge if it isnt going to pull you out of your bugs and plants comfort zone? I dont know, I might just be a dick haha.

the challenge isn't to get out of your comfort zone, it is to shoot for the challenge. Why can't people just shoot what they want to. if people don't like they can vote accordingly, but maybe, just maybe someone who shoots only people decides to shoot a macro of a bug because they are getting out of thier comfort zone and shooting something other than portraits. then someone votes them down saying "stop shooting bugs and do something different" but for them it is different.

I guess I misinterpreted the intention of a challenge. To me a challenge (in any form - not just on here) is something that makes you work harder, that makes you try something different, that makes you think a different way. If you do what you are comfortable doing every time, then is it really a challenge?

Again, part of me is serious, the other part is just trying to induce conversation on a boring last hour of the work day.

Don't try to understand this site you will surely lose your mind

I don't see it as shooting within your comfort zone. I will have a go at anything, but if I know a bug or flower shot meets the challenge and the opportunity arises to fill that challenge with a specific Macro, then I use it.

I agree with your point about it being the easy way out sometimes, but shooting a good Macro is as much of a challenge as shooting a Still Life or an Action shot.

If I had a 900$ macro lens I'd use it for everything too ;P

Have you ever shot macro before. It is in fact, very challengeing.

I guess im getting shot down on this one haha.

I understand that taking a "good" macro shot is a challenge, that is undeniable.

But what im saying is if everytime a challenge gets posted, the first thing you do is go out and start shooting macros of a flower in your garden to submit to the "Extreme Emotion" challenge, then it just seems to me that you arent really "growing"

Im the new guy. I have opinions. I love message boards.

Opinions are good, so are questions, that is how you grow and develop more informed opinions. Being the 'new guy' doesn't debar you from stating what you think, but at DPC, there will always be plenty who will try to prove you are wrong. Luckily, I am not one of them, but I do have my own opinions as well :))

But since this is the internet, I can pull out the ultimate argument trump card:

WIKIPEDIA SAYS IM RIGHT!

I fed false info into wikipedia, in case of just such an event. Therefore, your info is corrupted, it is false and you will now be assimilated!!

Then I am filing a ticket with the wikipedia gods, to have your entry purged from the record, and the consulting Jeeves of askjeeves.com to verify and confirm the relationship of macro to challenges to AJ being right.

Dragging this back into something mildly resembling the original point ...

Different people want different things, AJ. I'm more in the line of what you're suggesting, most of the time. I try new things, and I use challenge themes to make me shoot for different themes. Again, most of the time.

But not everyone's here for the same reasons, which is just fine.

Well, I've learned in my year at DPC that it doesn't matter at all what your subject is. Just make sure its sharp with many bright and bold colors and you'll win a ribbon.
Wait..... where the hell have I heard that?
07/19/2007 09:15:15 PM · #23
bright colors sharp lines eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......
I was thinking today (which I try not to do) about the "sharp" photograph. I myself am suppose to wear glasses but I never wear them only to go to the movies. I haven't wore them on a regular basis for at least 20 years. so my world is not sharp. If I try to show you my world you would say "that picture sucks it is not sharp" anyways I was thinking how many people actually see a sharp world?

I know I don't, lol! My most frequent comments are OOF and too soft! Yet, it always looks sharp to me. Then, when I try to compensate a bit, I get the oversharpened comment.

unless the flower, macro, insects are all from the same photographer all the time, i dont see a problem here.
