This photo of mine, which won the blue in the poverty challenge here in 2004, will be exhibited in a gallery in NYC this weekend, July 20-22. It is part of the Charity In-Focus Photography Contest And Exhibition. There were about 300 entries, and mine was one of about 80 honorable mentions.
I don't know if mine was the 5th highest honorable mention or 80th (and I know 80 is a big number), but it's still kind of exciting to know my photo will be hanging in a gallery in Tribeca, although the content of the photo is nothing to celebrate. But you know what I mean.
Too bad I'm living in South Korea now and won't be able to attend.
If any of you will happen to be in the area, click on the links and check it out. There should be some good photos on display, albiet many depressing ones like this. But that's the point, it's for the cause.
The one they will display of mine is a higher resolution than this, which is a bit more poignant because you can see some more detail than you can on this image.

Why would this be in a gallery it is not even a good picture the only thing that makes it interesting is some poor disabled person. Good job at exploiting a sick dismembered homeless man. Perhaps someday you will find yourself sitting on some cardboard waiting for some spare change and some a-hole will take a picture of you. At least a bunch of stuck up rich bastards got to feel good about themselves and there tax write-offs. Just curious if ya ever felt like that. Does anyone agree with the words I put up there above. In general not as a single example directed at this picture.?????????? |

It's called Photojournalism.
It's a sad fact of life. It is the real world we live in unfortunately.
It NEEDS to be seen.
By the way, it takes GUTS to point a camera at someone in a situation like that. It sits deep inside a person for a long time. Ask any war photojournalist if that kind of depiction slides off them like water on a ducks back - the answer is no.
But it still NEEDS to be seen.
Oh and a big Congrats is in order Mark!

So seeing this homeless guy in a gallery helps who? I agree stuff needs to be seen. maybe I'll start taking pictures of super overweight people eating at mcdonalds. or maybe mentally handi-capped people playing frisbee or little people changing lightbulbs. perhaps nuns on the toliet all this happens in the real world and must be seen. Evermore so while drinking wine and writing checks. I really want to argue. I think I have a deep need for it. So whatever you say I will try to say otherwise. Don't know why I picked this post it just happened. I do believe that homeless exploitation is overplayed in photography. |

Congrats Mark.
For Electrolost.. its a very disputed subject and I dont know where I stand. May be the life of Kevin Carter is the ultimate debate on this subject.
His suicide note read
"I am depressed ... without phone ... money for rent ... money for child support ... money for debts ... money!!! ... I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners...I have gone to join Ken if I am that lucky."
This has been discussed here before..for anyone not aware..

Helps people who don't normally pay attention to life's throwaways realize, at least for an evening, that they are out there. Might translate into some charitable donations, might not. Does no harm. The guy in the picture is viewed by countless people every day, same as you or I. What difference does it make if a few hundred more people take a look at him on film. |

How many of us turn a blind eye to a disposable society, as they sit comfortably in their recliners, complaining about how rough things are because they can't find anything to watch on their 42" wide screen TV. How many of us complain that there isn't any ice left in the ice-maker. How many of us complain, oh never mind, you don't want to hear about me anymore.
It is very fortunate that photojournalism exists, and some have the guts to do that sort of work. It has a way of putting life in perspective sometimes and should make many/most people more fortunate, a little more appreciative of how good they really have it, and perhaps learn to be a tad more humble.
I still congratulate Mark for his guts and for the accolades in getting the recognition.

Wow, when I first posted this there were no replies for days, then I bumped it and went to bed, and I woke up to this. Thanks everyone.
I guess I should chime in on the discussion as well.
Electrolost: I respect your feelings on the subject, and I agree it's a controversial one. Your tone could have been a little better, however, but I'll take that as showing how passionate you are about the subject. I'm curious, do you think DPC should be condemned for having a poverty challenge? It was almost inevitable that a photo like this would be included.
I think these pictures do need to be seen. The proceeds of this exhibition are going to charities to help these people, and without the photos there's no impact. If Sally Struthers was sitting on the set of All In The Family asking you to donate to help the poor people of Africa, there would be no impact, and no one would donate. So they take the camera to Africa and film heartbreaking footage of the poor starving children to get people to act. Is that exploitation? It is only if the producers are pocketing the money.
If these images didn't exist, most of the priveleged world wouldn't be aware of the problem, and nothing would be done to help.

I just re-read the beginning of my last post, and I see how it could look like I was being sarcastic when I said, ". . . and I woke up to this. Thanks Everyone." I wasn't being sarcastic, I just meant, "hey I got some replies!" Then I genuinely thanked everyone.
That's cool Electrolost, say what you feel. That's what boards are for. |
