Over the weekend something funky started happening to my relatively new SB-600. It's Less than a year old, so it's probably under warrantee, but all the paperwork is back in Philadelphia.
On Friday night it was working fine. I used it a few times without issue. Then on Saturday I put it on the camera and and the batteries were dead. I replaced them, put the flash on camera, and turn it on. Then every 30 seconds the flash would go off without my doing anything even with the unit turned off. Explains why the batteries were dead, but I can't think of anything I did that would have damaged it.
I guess I need to find the nearest service center and ship in in.

I switched from NiCad rechargeable to throw away Alkaline a few months ago. When I opened it to change the dead batteries there was a thin bluish-white film in one area. I wiped it clean with a tissue, but saw no corrosion.

That bluish white film is the batteries leaking. They will cause severe corrosion. If you can get a pencil eraser in the compartment rub it on the contacts then wipe again with a clean cloth or tissue. You really need to neutralize the acid that has leaked into the battery compartment and usually you can use a little rubbing alchohol to do this.
If you are not going to use your flash for awhile, take the batteries out. Even if you use nicads this should be done. Nicads should be removed if they are not going to be used for up to 3 months. |

I use them use a month or so. I just rechecked the compartment and it needs a better cleaning.

I thought maybe you had the repeating strobe function set on, but I looked into it and the SB600 doesn't have that feature.
Try replacing the batteries with the power on. |
