Are adding vignettes legal in advanced editing? I know they're not in basic, as a got dq'd for it, but can you do it under the advanced editing rules set? I tried searching the forums but they were of no help, and I got very contradictory answers.

Yes, I do it all the time. If they are very extreme they will get you DQ'd probably, but in moderation they are acceptable. When you push 'em too far, it can be interpreted as adding a new feature and then you are in danger. I use them to darken corners and force the eye inward.

But gradient is allowed in basic, right.. Because it is being applied to the whole image ? ... I remember seeing gradients in basic editing challenges. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

I think you are thinking of "Gradient Map" -- which is a color-shifting effect, not an actual gradient or mask.
