OK well I wont bore you with football this week, I shot some NJCAA soccer today, local juco is reigning National champions, was an honor to get to share the field with them. I've only shot soccer once and not even close to this level, so the reults arent as good as I expected, the speed was much faster then any level I have seen before.

Great work Matt. What lenses/iso/shutter speed were you using?
these are much better than the soccer pics I took today of my niece's semi-final, under-18 house league game. I will be trying again tomorrow in the final.
That should be interesting because when they played the same team last, they lost 11-0 and it was the worst display of sportsmanship by the other team I have ever seen. There were fights on the field and almost in the stands. (the other coach, while winning 11-0 in a house league game, was making fun of how one of our players runs, and encouraging his team to run up the score even more) The difference is that last time we only had 7 players against their full team, this time we will have everyone. :) |

All are shot on the 1DMKIIn, F2.8, ISO and SS varied due to crappy weather, between getting sunny and getting rained on, and mixed clouds ISO and SS were all over the place, lens is the Sigma 120-300 F2.8.

I won't post any more soccer today. Instead, I have football and a triathlon from this weekend. Sorry for the long post.
Football:
Strange shot of the day, an endzone celebration that led to an unsportsmanlike conduct:
Cheerleaders:
And a couple of impromptu group shots:
And now for the triathlon (duathlon actually, the swim was cancelled due to driving rain and a very low lake temp):

Another night of 3200 ISO volleyball. All shot with 1DMKIIn, 70-200 2.8L @ 2.8, 1/500 SS.

Messed up a bit tonight. I was shooting 1/800 when I should have been at 1/640 or 1/500. At one point I even bumped up to 1/1000 by mistake. I'll blame it on still being very sore from a dentist appointment this morning. :P
Still, the photos came out ok. Just a bit noisier than I would like.
(considering 6400 pushed 2/3 - 1 stop in post)

it rained tonight, but i didn't care. i just had to prove to myself that weather-tight actually meant weather-tight. it does. i love my camera ;-)
these were all shot with my 70-200 f/2.8L IS at iso1000, f/2.8, with the shutter between 1/200 and 1/320
this was shot with the 16-35 at iso1000, f/5.6, 1/60

The cricket Twenty-20 world cup is on in South Africa at the moment. Managed to get this shot on Friday, will upload a few more later.
This was a Sri-Lanken batsman being bowled by a bowler from Kenya.

Great stuff Matt. Very impressive for iso 3200. I have never had success at high iso shots. Would I be correct in saying that the key is to make sure that you get the shutter speed you need, and use what iso you need to in order to get proper exposure? I tend to try to avoid going up in iso, and as a result end up underexposing and getting lots of noise. Does that make sense? |

Game time of 6pm saw first half in sunlight and second half in darkness. Even in daylight I had to up the ISO in order to get higher shutter speeds, and at night those high ISO shots were really loaded with noise. I found out that the noise reduction in PS CS2 really does not work too well and I guess I'll have to spring for Neat Image or Noise Ninja. I also wish I could skirt the sidelines! Very hard to shoot from one location, even if it was first row in the end zone. |

And here I thought the key to using High ISO was using the Canon camera!
Seriously the key to using High ISO is to expose to the right. I try to get +2/3 of a stop over what my camera meters as correct exposure. I only need to do this at 3200, at 1600 I can underexpose a bit and still pull them back with very little noise, but I still try to avoid that. That said I would rather deal with some noise from high ISO then to try and deal with way too much motion blur. For volleyball my MIN SS is 1/400 I prefer 1/640 or faster to freeze the limbs and ball, but rarely can achieve that in most gyms I shoot in as most officials wont allow flash when Varsity level is playing. Thanks for the compliment.

Tonight I tried something different, I shot from the ceiling, well almost, a nice catwalk way up high. Nice different perspective then usual but hot as can be. I also bumped my SS up somehow and I underexposed a bit so they are noisier then I like. Oh well I covered my assignment. :D
MattO
People compliment the shots I put up at 3200 all the time, and I always preach expose to the right on the histogram, well tonight I got fooled a bit, all of these shots are brought back +2/3 in raw with exposure, WB fixed and then a run through Noise Ninja, each of these could likely still print very nicely at 8X10 or maybe bigger. Sometimes it is about the equipment.

A few shots from today, and a question. First today's soccer:
And now the question:
Today's light (bright, low, late afternoon sunlight) was very difficult for me. I've dealt with it (many times) before, moastly by shooting frontlit and fixing the shadows as much as possible with lightroom and photoshop. But lately I've been hearing about shooting backlit in these conditions. Where should I start? I can expose for the shadows (usually at higher ISO's) but that leaves seriously blown out rim lighting, and usually horrible backgrounds and sometimes foregrounds (overexposed). Now, most of the fields I shoot at are open, no high stadium walls to shade the BG. Am I missing something obvious? How do you guys tackle this lighting? I've even considered fill flash, but I've melted a flash before and I dont want to do that again!
This should be pretty basic, but so far I feel like I've been compromising too much. Thanks for any tips. |

If at all avoidable I dont shoot into the sun/backlight situations due to contrast problems and possible flare into the lens. ON bright sunny days I always shoot in AV mode and usually +1/3-+2/3 to help with the shadows on the faces. I use my ISO to control SS, too slow I bump it up, too fast I lower it to help with noise. I personally dont care too much if I blow out the background or foreground with exposure, they arent the subject of my photos. I want the face visible and exposed for. I also shoot wide open IE 2.8 to blur background, control DOF, and isolate my subject, another reason why I dont really care about exposing for foreground-background. If I do my job right and shoot tight and crop tighter not much of either is going to see ink in a print anyway.

Thanks Matt, thats pretty much my strategy as well. I generally avoid back/side lighting. The FG/BG issue is only when shooting backlit. I'm just trying to figure out how others have been successful with the backlighting technique (thats why I mentioned the venue, I think it may be a major factor). I just really hate racoon eyes! |
