Ok, our girls had a sleepover last night and, as usual, young girls love to play in the studio.

I've uploaded the exact same image here & on my smugmug page - on DPC it looks HORRIBLE (flat, lifeless, almost no saturation), but it looks exactly like the original on smugmug... I've included links below for reference:

DPC version

SmugMug version

If you open them in separate windows / tabs, the difference is astounding! (Again, the EXACT same file was uploaded to each site) Someone PLEASE help??? Thx!

Billy

Just opened the DPC version in PS. It's in ProPhoto RGB. Smugmug must be converting it to sRGB for you.

BTW, looks just like it does on smugmug in Photoshop. :-) Convert your color space dude :-P

Tada sRGB version ;-)

The file sizes are different though.
DPC = 53.3 Kb
Smugmug = 80.2 Kb

WOnder if Smugmug does convert it.

Are you sure u uploaded the same edit version. The reason I ask is smugmug shows your pic with the following info:
900x602 @ 210.20 kb

Your DPC image is uploaded at:
800x535 @ 54.64 kb

A large difference.

The different color space accounts for the size difference. Look at my converted file. It's close to the smugmug size.

Because it's the same answer every time, and this happens an amazing number of times. It's always a colorspace issue.

R.

I didn't mean that like it sounds. Great work Leroy. But as he said, he KNEW: the most time it took was waiting for photoshop to load :-)

So hey,

Which color space is best for DPC?

sRGB; the web standard colorspace.

sRGB is the only color space that will work on the web. Smugmug is likely using imageMagik or some other graphics library to convert the large ProPhoto RGB profile to sRGB.

ok, I changed the color space and (of course), it now looks just like the crap I posted already LOL

HOW do i convert this while keeping the colors as they should be? (Leroy, care to tell me exactly what steps you took, please?)

Edit -===> Convert to Profile

Destination Space : sRGB.
07/15/2007 02:09:10 PM · #15
so whats best for smugmug? sRGB?
07/15/2007 02:15:10 PM · #16
Again, thank you Leroy - I was trying to do it using 'View> Proof Colors'.

(Adam, yes - I'd stick with the sRGB.... for the obvious reasons LOL)

According to this, sRGB.

Edit: typos galore

i just wanted it said, because i got lost in this whole discussion

ALSO, when i post photos on smugmug, it seems they desaturate a tad, i just work around it and up the saturation of my photos. I do work in
sRGB IEC61966-2.1, so i guess it should be pretty accurate. Or maybe i am saving them for the web wrong?
