about this shot? I think I might wanna enter it in Canons Photography in the Parks contest. I'm sure there will be stuff entered that's way better than this but I like this photo for some reason. I'm also gonna enter one for Wildlife.
Anyway, some input, suggestions, changes would be appreciated. Maybe you guys see something that I don't.

First, a couple of comments on your photo:
Overall impression is that it's a good, visually appealing image. The strong points are the excellent texture in the rocks and the subtle variations of color in the grass.
What's keeping this photo back IMO is the lack of a foreground to add more interest. There was a "Landscape Photo Tutorial" thread here at DPC long ago, and one of the most important things that it taught me is that a landscape needs to be really awesome and striking if the image is to survive without a foreground. I don't think this is the case here...
Also, it could use a deeper blue in the sky. Maybe add a gradient? There seems to be a halo where the rock meets the sky - is that from sharpening or is it also present in the original?
All in all, I would score this a 6-7 in a DPC challenge :)
Now, the contest you are talking about seems very interesting... There will probably be a zillion entries and zero chances of winning, but I'm tempted to submit something as well. I would post it here, but don't want to hijack your thread. Any idea as to what kind of editing (if any) is allowed? I went through the rules but they say nothing about this.
Cheers,
Matei |

Here is the original. As you can see the sky was grey that day and the halo you mention is present in the original. I think it's just the way the sky is.

Where is Waldo, Fido, or John Deere, or Dear Julie in a bikini, or even better, a Harley Chopper with an American Flag, and/or accented by some amazing clouds. A Hang Glider or Colorful Balloonist/Parachutist, would also be cool.
In small, waldo-size, so it doesn't take over.
I haven't seen any Past Winners for comparison.
For a Parks and Nature category, some items may not apply, except the Harley. Go for multiple exposures combined to an HDR photo, if allowed. |
