Lately I've read several tutorials on viewing and editing images and how to set the stage for either. I've learned how to calibrate my monitor properly and set the color to give me the best and most accurate image I can get from my computer. After all of my reading, like when I go to vote on the challenges, or even just enjoy the shots by people, I follow the instructions I̢۪ve read.

1) Adjust and calibrate your monitor.
2) When editing or viewing, your monitor should be on at least an hours before. This also applies to calibration.
3) The room must be dimly lit.

I̢۪ve seen quite a few comments about dark images but they look great on my monitor, following the rules of looking at digital images online.

Just my perception so far. Any other suggestions? I'm still learning all of this digital imaging stuff.

So, up until now you've followed instructions and things look good? No, I don't think I have any other suggestions ... for you at least. I do appreciate your taking the time to help make other people's work look its best!

To prepare for an imperfect world.

You may have done your homework. Others haven't and will continue to view and publish images regardless of the guidelines you know to follow.

When you enter images in the challenges, expect a considerable variance of individual perception.

I appreciate this thread - I started a "why does this image look different online than in Paint Shop Pro" thread and have gotten some great advice on how I might adjust the image to show better. I've posted the original shot -- please read the disclaimer :)

Paul, not sure how to take your comment. Was this sarcasm or sincerity? The first statement threw me off.

Zeus, I agree. I think leaning the right way from those that have already figured it out is a good starting point.

Theresa, I really like your shot. I left you a post on your thread also.

Despite having what I think is a fairly close monitor, I get a lot of comments about "too dark." When I look at it on one of the monitor's at work (not calibrated), it is too dark. So, I tend to slightly overexpose my shots for challenges. OR, I make them a touch brighter in post processing.

It definately is amazing the difference calibration makes. I calibrated my monitor for the first time after I joined DPC and read a thread about it. It's like looking at the world through a new set of eyes.
