1. Does the Canon 5D take the same type of memory card as the Rebel XT?

2. Once upon a time I saw a list of cards rated by speed, which helps burst-mode clearing of the buffer. What were those fast cards?

(I'm going camping for four days and can't bring my laptop, so I'll probably just get a big memory card... couple of 4GBs or 8GBs.)

Thanks!

Yup, all work OK.. the Sandisk Extreme III work great in the 5D, my buffer is always cleared pretty quickly.

Unless you have a 1-series camera, most DSLR cannot take full advantage of the write speeds of the current crop of fast CF cards and these include the "Extreme" line from Sandisk. The CF card is rarely the limiting factor in write speeds unless you have a 1st generation CF card which were really slow.

Rob Galbraith's CF card Performance database.

Oh, that's very interesting! So the "II" would give my XT (and possibly someday 5D) the same performance of the "IV"?

Thanks Doc, food for thought! :-)

I have a number of Sandisk Ultra 2 cards AND Extreme IIIs, on my 5D the difference in speed is massively noticable, and thats in a real world envorionment. The only time I do not find much difference is when transferring the files to my PC, both versions of the card give pretty equal performance there.
Havent read Glabraiths article, but just thought I would add my tuppences worth.

Slippy, does this mean you are giving serious consideration to the purchase of a 5D?

Yes. Even though my wife's car is done and we're auto-shopping this weekend. And my car might be done as well, but hopefully the problem is fixable. So the yes is sort of tentative. I hate to cancel a fun expense because of BS expenses. :-(
