what DJLuba has said is good advice. Some of things I also noticed, both of these shots seem to be missing that extra pizazz, that little something that makes a shot. With the second one, it's a great concept, just give it that extra spark by zooming in a bit closer, giving it a stronger macro feature, right now it's right between macro and regular! Also light the cigarette, the bright red of it burning would be a cool effect, as would letting the ash build up and then shooting, smoke can also be fun to play with!
With the first shot I think you need a sharper focus, this appears to be pretty standard stock photography. So sharpen that puppy up, and as DJLuba said, get something that contrasts the metal objects, that will really make them jump out at you. Also it seems to me that the shot's lighting is too harsh. I'm not sure what you've used to light it, but try using only reflected light, it will provide a much nicer light to take pictures with!
That's all I've got, hope I've been at least SOME help!
