I was given the opportunity to pick up two Merlin chicks that had been rehabilitated a local rehab center here called Wolf Hollow and deliver them to a release point where they had been originally found. They were banded for future ID and then released.

After the first was released an adult immediately showed up at the top of the nesting tree. This was likely the original parent and is a very good thing as Merlins need to learn to take food and feed on the wing, something humans can not teach them. These two will likley survive!

How nice! Such little guys at this point, huh? Hopefully they'll do OK.

Actually a Merlin is a pretty small bird of prey, only 10" long. These are about full grown and will not get much bigger. They are pretty good hunters and with the help of an adult these should do just fine.
