Thanks for the kind wishes. I am worried that it did torch the whole thing, but if it did, I will be leaning to the D200 - it has some sweet features.

Ouch - really sorry to hear about this, if your looking for a new Nikon I'd say go with the D200, I upgraded from D70 and its an absolute diamond for literally everything.

Also, not wanting to be the bearer or bad news but I believe salt water is an instant kill if it gets into the electronics.. :(

Good luck

Hurray! I just spoke to Nikon Service about my dunked camera. My D70 and 18-200 lens can be repaired , and for less than I guessed (<350 bucks). I should have my camera back in about two weeks.

that's cool!
I almost lost my camera last year, in a similar situation. my luck: i asked my boyfriend to take a picture of me in water, so he had the camera in he hands, waaaay above water when the wave came out of nowhere (the water was sooooo still 2 secs before). 2 waves out of nowhere and then again the perfect calm! grrrrr

My camera just came back from Nikon! All appears to be fine with my rebuilt and improved D70. They replaced basically all the electronics - they all were fried in the swim in the Pacific. They also fixed my 18-200mm and it appears to be behaving better than before.

Here are a couple of test shots. So far so good. I guess my D70 can swim, just as long as they take a quick shower and dry off well!

speaking as the owner of two fine d70 nikons, i'm sure it's because there's a unacknowledged desire for a d200 lurking in the hearts of these d70 owners... it's unconscious destruction to force the upgrade...

me? i'm quite conscious of my d200 desires, so there could be no claim of "unconsciousness" in any such destruction.

sigh.
