Looking for some input here. I've been in DPC for a bit over a year, 30+ challenges, and have been happy with how I've progressed to this point (mostly self taught) , but for the last 2 months or so feel like I've really gotten stuck in a rut. I need some advice on how to move off this plateau. I understand that taking lots of pictures is the first step, but having done that for awhile I'm finding it hard to get better. I do regularly listen to Radient Vista, look at comments from my favorite photographers here, and try to find time to comment critically on photos but again still don't seem to be moving ahead. Any thoughts about a) workshops; b) online classes (BettrPhotgraphy.com), c) hire model for more extended portraiture work; d) or maybe just get some new equipment (my D70 is showing its age :)) - anyway any thoughts anyone has would be appreciated.

How about this, use only focal length for 30 days, trying to take at least one picture a new day. Example, take your 105mm and just shoot with that for a month. Might give you some new insight. Just a thought.

If you think you reached a plateau, the cure is usually to get out of your comfort zone.

Good luck!

I have felt that way in the past...so I challenged myself and did a side challenge. That really helped me see what I could do and get honest feedback at the same time. It also lets you see how others interpret and might get the creatives juices flowing again.

Try doing some self portraits. You might be pleasantly surprised. (Looking for the link to the "self portrait" thread.

My 2¢! (Beautiful stuff in your portfolio. Enjoyed the look!)

1. If you think you learned all technical aspects of photography learn things that are more important. Learn about colors and compositions. Start drawing or painting. I hear that will change your view on photography.

2. Put camera away for a week and just look. Look at the light, shadows and shapes. You'll want to photograph things but don't do it. Pickup camera at the end of the week and you'll have new ideas and views.

Just my thoughts.

Rut you say? All your photos are above average. This might help you feel better. My SLR is taking some time to get used to and my photos of late stink. If I were you, I would experience with lighting, indoor shots first, then take trips outdoors and look for nice things that would go together well in one frame.
