Isn't 'after dark' when dark is over? During the day? :P

LOL. yes.
Why is extra rules, back to old rules? Bit confusing to add an extra rules tag when there are none? |

Not only is he a teenager, he's a pedantic teenager at that ;)
Back to the 'normal' rules? I won't be able to redo this shot then: Brighton Pier

Rob, I really like the image of the Pier, great job. Question: Is that CCD noise in the dark areas above the Pier? I enlarged your image and scanned left to right. I see a strange pattern in the black of the night.
I have heard that the CCD cameras have a challenge with noise in low light and just wondered if this is what we see in this image.
It is a terrific image. Did you stitch it together with some special software? It would be nice to learn how it was made. The exposure is extraordinary on the left side. It has been a challenge to get high-contrast, night exposures right, but you seem to have it bang on. Congratulations. Cheers, Michael

Great...let's do night shots when we aren't allowed to get rid of specs and whatnot that seem to be pretty common in low light (or no light) situations.
Guess this is another one I'm gonna be sitting out (an no, not just because of the rule change...I go back to work this week and classes start Wednesday. Can't really be treking around in the dark when I have early morning office hours PLUS classes--we night folks always get screwed this time of year). |

But Sher, there is a whole lot of NIGHT this time of the year! At least in the northern hemisphere anyway.

Yup :-D
Dark starts around 5 (my classes start at five and end at 10), sun comes up around 7:30 (I have to be in my office from 8-4 so I can get to my classes at 5...i'm in the car at 7:30 and asleep for as long as I can before that).
Just a tough week for me to try to be out and about after dark. An opportunity might present itself at some point over the weekend, but I won't hold my breath :).

Apologies, I should have pointed out that the image is actually 8 images combined, what you see are jpeg artifacts due to compressing it for the web (the original was approx 140Mb). There was little noise in the original images, they were shot at 20 - 30 second exposures. Unfortunately I don't have the images to hand so I can't give any further details.

But I thought it was legal!!! If no one requests a DQ I'll be OK, ;) |

Rob,
Honestly now, what is the probability of no one requesting a DQ? Does it not feel like DQs are requested for every image in every challenge? It seems that more images have DQ requests these days than images that do not. You will get a DQ request.
Where I live, DQ means Dairy Queen, which sell wonderful soft ice cream. So, it has always been a good thing here. But, it now has a whole new connotation with DPC and this avalanche of disqualification requests.
Cheers,
Michael

I know it's a headache for our Site Council but I think the current "avalanche" of DQs is a good thing. An awareness that entries will be scrutinized regarding their compliance with the rules is the best way to deter the cheaters.

I you take a look at how many shot are DQued than you can see that there is a good reason for all those requests. I think it's fine, people shouldn't win because they cheated :Þ |

It's 8 degrees right now in Norther Virginia! Eight!
I've got some ideas for "After Dark" but geez. I sure hope there is an "After Dark II" this summer.
Anyone else afraid to leave the house? |

I am too but I did brave it out last night for my shot. It was on a 33 story building roof & it was butt cold! With the wind chill it was less than 15 below. With all that, I still didnt get the shto I wanted! I, too, hope that htis challenge is repeated int he summer when the condition are more amiable.

Yep, I went out a few nights ago (when it was a mild 20f) but very cloudy. Last two night the temp have been way too cold. In Philly area it's 10F. Tried some indoors "after dark" shots last night but nothing any good. |

This is exactly what I'm afraid of. Getting the idea, and everything all set up, only to realize what a bad idea it was to think I could take it out there. Glad to see I'm not alone. |

Well, I just went out and got my shots and when I got home to pull them off my card, all the files are unreadable/corrupted. I got the shot I wanted, but now it looks like I'm screwed. :-(

Woa. Another good reason to stay home. I've had that happen to me, but i didn't know it was from the cold. Thanks for the heads up. |

My picture is going to be a picture of someone taking a picture at night outside and freezing to death to get a picture for this challenge. |

I was out in -16° (no wind chill) degrees here in CO about 1 1/2 weeks ago for about an hour, and had no problems with my card. Wondering if it is more a battery thing? I had an external battery on at the time.
